Greens coming around nicely

As always, Greeted warmly by Tony in the pro shop. Greens were perfect, having no ballmarks on them. (Due to the fact it's tough hitting greens if not in fairway) They do a great job welcoming and thanking golfers for the drive. Don't listen to old complaints, give it a shot. Temp teebox on 12. Other than that, great day.

Scenic Course, Great Challenge

I was the first one off the tee on a fall saturday, and it was one of the best golfing experiences I've had. They make no secret about the course being a "ball eater," and that accuracy is way more important that power. The only way to play the course is with a course guide (I had it free on my phone or you can purchase one in the pro shop), as it has yardages for landing zones off the tee, layups and into the greens. I hit driver twice all day and that was all that I needed. Good iron players will have success here, and if you play the course the way its meant to be played and don't try to overpower it, you will have fun. Bring a few extra balls because you'll lose a few even on a good round. Overall, this is a very scenic course with friendly people everywhere who enjoy the challenge that comes with playing The Shattuck. Highly recommended, and I'll be back soon as well.

Unplayable

I played this course as part of a promotion, I was warned the course is very difficult. Unfortunately, the condition of the tee boxes, fairways and greens made this tough track unplayable, The greens have been lost and should be redone and not played on for at least 2 years. The fairways were no better hard and full of crabgrass but the tee boxes were the worst, very few even had sparse grass on them. I was playing with a beginner and she was unable to tee off on several hole because of the poor condition. It is a shame the layout could be excellent if course conditions could be brought up. I would not recommend this course unless the conditions are greatly improved.

a challenge for any handicap

The Shattuck, built in 1991, is a great challenge for any golfer. Accuracy is a premium. The setting is magnificent, the views are spectacular and the golf is extremely demanding. Conditions of the course are not pristine but considering the setting and demanding maintenance the course requires it is not terrible. I play The Shattuck at least 4 to 5 times a summer, if I lived closer I would be a member. Friendly staff, nice tavern with food, serene setting and challenging golf at its best.

Tough course - nice greens

Focus and effort is apparent on maintenance of greens and approach. Tees and fairways much less so , a little ragged there. Difficult target golf, fantastic views and lovely out of the way area, deals are the way to go. play the shattuck, bring enough balls to not care about score a lot of carries but enjoy the view of Monadnock.

A challenging course with beautiful views of Mt Monadnock.

A challenging course with beautiful views of Mt Monadnock. Leave your ego at home and enjoy making shots. Multiple rounds are necessary to gain the course knowledge to allow for better scores. New players should ask for Tony for tips to maximize your enjoyment. The staff (especially Tony and Tina) were super friendly and made our experience memorable. Overall a great value.

Beautiful but a tight target course.

If you can hit drives straight and position you ball this is fun course. But if you want to make great score it will take a few rounds to get the layout.

Great fun and challenging course.

On a clear day, the views of Mt. Monadnock are absolutely beautiful. The course is challenging with variety and elevation.
The staff is very friendly. Although the maintainence could be better and the location is remote, I would encourage everyone to try this course out. It is worth it!!

This is not a golf course

I don't know what sport this place is supposed to be promoting, but this is not golf. I hit 5 iron off every tee and drove through the fairway regularly. could not hold the greens with a wedge. It is comically difficult and shamefully under maintained. Forget about hitting driver or fairway woods. I couldn't even see the green on a par three because of all the brush overgrowth. Not worth the drive or the headache. If you play there you will feel shame as a golfer.

A place to play once

Shattuck is a shadow of its former self still holding on to its hey day. The waste bunkers are filled scrub brush and under growth to the point where there is no chance of finding a wayward tee shot. The day we were there one of the holes had a temp green and the greens were in rough shape burned and bare. Greens held approach shots ok but not great. Tee areas were bare and or lacked grass in many areas. Many blind areas for landing areas. Cannot use Driver or fairway woods off tees, need to be long irons at best. This will still leave you long irons into greens that will not hold the approach. Very challenging and mentally tiring requiring intense focus on ALL 18 HOLES. Bring your A game for a C score at best. Expect to lose a dozen of balls.

Challenging to say the least

Great views.
Some greens required attention as they had large areas that died.
Course is target golf extreme!
Lots of blind shots over wetlands and outcroppings.
Bring your A game to score like a C player.
Add the cost of a dozen balls to your green fees.

Tough scenic course

Nice course layout that demands accuracy. The course itself was in fair to poor condition in spots (some brown and bare areas in fairways and on some greens), but that said I still enjoyed the course for the price I paid. Beautiful views of Mt. Monadnock from some of the tees, and lots of nature everywhere.

Poor greens and tees

Greens were in poor shape, burned out in places, rough. Many tees had little or no grass, tees were not level. Fairways were fair to poor. Overall, conditions were unsatisfactory.

Spectacular Course in Deteriorating Conditions

The Shattuck is a spectacular course with conditions that have certainly deteriorated over the past few years, especially In comparison to when it first opened for play (over 20 yrs ago). The greens are in horrible condition, the fairways are okay, and the tees are not great. Also, even though the beauty of the course has a lot to do with the woods and natural terrain it is cut in to, the vegetation and trees need to be cut back and thinned. It is obvious and a shame, especially for a course of this high caliber that money is not being spent the way it should for its upkeep.
Our foursome (handicaps from an 8 to a 21) had a great afternoon of golf at the Shattuck. We knew what conditions to expect from recent visits. The poor conditions of the greens was the most disappointing aspect, as they took away any semblance of a real putting game, Also, the pace of play was slow -(over 5hrs!). However, playing with a patient attitude and a few refreshments we brought along, and at a great value (discounted! GolfNow price) we were able to enjoy the raw beauty of the Shattuck and enjoy a good game of golf.

The course has tremendous potential but is in desperate need of some up keep and information about wetland carry off the tees!!

The Shattuck is a layout which requires pinpoint control and placement! There are "marsh" areas in front of most of the tee boxes and a lot of the greens! There wasn't one mention of how far you need to carry the tee shot on any hole!!! The course also had the worst cart paths I have ever seen, loose gravel and rocks jetting out everywhere,no assphalt to be found anywhere and I have played hundreds of courses The Shattuck is in need of some serious maintenance and a lot of TLC!!! It is a shame because it is a very interesting golf course with a lot of twists and turns!! If you play this layout bring "lots" of golf balls or rent some scuba gear!!!

Know what to expect

Yes, the course isn't in great shape. Yes, it's hard. Yes, you should know both of these things before playing.

If you go in with an open mind and know what to expect, you'll have fun. The course requires you to play smart, and if you plan your next few shots, you'll shave lots of strokes off of your score.

The greens were in rough shape, but passable in most spots. You can't expect pristine conditions when you pay the price GolfNow offers.

Give it a shot! Stop for a bite to eat in downtown Jaffrey at the local pizza shop after your round.

TOUGH!!!

This is one of the most picturesque courses you will ever see. Slope rating over 140 a real killer. Not long but no mercy for missed fairways.A challenge for all skill levels but 90% of missed fairways result in a lost ball. Good Luck! and have fun.

Great challenging course with the best staff and views in the area

Played this course on 6/15/13. Got a deal through golfnow for $29 for 18 with a cart and a bucket of balls at the range. It took us longer to get there than expected coming from the Lowell area. Called the clubhouse to let them know we were running 10 mins late. They were able to shuffle things around and get us right out when we showed up.

The starter (Tony) was one of the best starters I have ever met. Gave us tips on how to play the course successfully. A far departure from the starters that just take your slip without saying a word to you.

The course had gotten a lot of rain in the previous week so the conditions weren't the best I have seen it. That was the only issue I had with the total experience.

We got lunch at the turn in the bar. Beer prices and food prices are good. I spent under $20 and I bought a round of beers and a burger with fries. Bartender was extremely friendly and service was quick.

Finished the round with a much higher score than I am used to and a lot of lost balls but overall it was a great day. We signed up for a July scramble there before leaving!

I would recommend this course to anyone who hasn't played it. It has better views than any course in New England and the staff is great. Just remember to bring your Top Flites.

This course has seen better days!

I found the course to be friendly for a person who uses their iron play as an asset. The course was blind at times but the course book that you could purchase eliminated alot of the guess work. The course itself has seen better days i'm sure and needs more attn. The greens were decent at best regardless that they were aerated just a week or so before we played. The greens were all different speeds and many dead areas accompanied the problems the greens already had.
I would play there again but it would take alot more TLC to replace the image i have of my first round there.
Hint......Until the course is playing at its full potential, Don't pay full price.
