Hillsborough Country Club
About
Hillsborough Country Club is tucked away amongst the foothills of the Sourland Mountains. The golf course overlooks the beautiful Amwell Valley, sprawling across lush rolling hills gently sprinkled with mature trees. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for all skill levels, it is even gentle enough for beginners. While it may not be what you're looking for if you want a long and challenging test, it's great for a casual round with a few tricky surprises. Accuracy will be generously rewarded but the golf course isn't overly punishing if you're slightly errant. Golfers will come across a fair amount of strategically placed sand traps as well as the occasional water hazard. In addition to the course, you can get even more short game practice in on Hillsborough Country Club's practice chipping and putting greens and there is also a driving range available.

Great potential but needs work
Course is laid out very nicely but is in need of a lot of work. T boxes were poor, greens are brutal, nothing sticks and like concrete. Fairways were ok. Challenging course that with right work could be top notch!
Ridiculous Greens
Although I enjoyed the layout of this course, the greens were so severely sloped it made it impossible to putt. On numerous occasions, my first putt would miss the hole & should have stopped a few feet past the hole, but the slope would take the ball about 15 ft further! Also, My approach iron shots would not hold on these hard sloped greens. Overall, these issues I just listed ruined my golf experience. I would recommend playing this course unless you do not care about your score. The view is terrific throughout the round.
Not Worth The Money
Friendly staff is the only plus. Hadn’t played the course in years and remembered it was a quirky layout, very short, and with severely sloping greens and fairways. Course conditioning is non-existent, except for the greens haacing been aerated about a week ago, so they were bumpy and slow- probably for the best, as several holes would have been unplayable with faster green speeds because of the slopes. More weeds than grass in the fairways and tees, which were rock hard where they weren’t dead. At $60 for a weekend round, I would at least expect a course with moderate conditioning.
Not very well maintained
Overall the course was just not in great shape for September. The grass was extremely patchy and several parts of many of the greens were burnt out. The bunkers are also poorly maintained and the tee boxes are atrocious. To add to the lackluster course conditions the entirety of the course was over run with gnats. Obviously that is hard to control but it did add to my less than desirable experience.
Terrible condition
This course was in awful shape. The greens seem to have not been rolled or mowed in weeks. The fairway and the rough are the exact same length. The sand traps have no sand.
DO NOT PLAY
Horrible. Would never play again. SAVE YOUR MONEY. Much better courses in the area for $50. Tee boxes and “fairways” (I use that term loosely) unkept and obviously not maintained. Horrible condition. Greens had apparently been aerated, but even considering that, they were horrible, sand ALL OVER, simply impossible to putt. Honestly, GolfNow should issue refunds for even allowing this course to be booked. FWIW, we played Heron Glen later in the afternoon, and for $30 more, you can an absolutely AMAZING course that should be the benchmark for every golf course.
Fairways were sparse in places. It was aerated which we knew, but the plugs were on the greens and the fringe. Also the sand was washed out of the holes and accumulate in certain areas not the green.
great pace, putting greens need repair
Having played this course before, I was well aware of the tight layout. If you're not straight off the tee, you can easily be in the woods or on another hole. Not a surprise. What was a surprise was the pace (great, I think we just got lucky with an 8am tee time), the number of trees they've removed since the last time which opened up a couple holes, especially the short par 4 with swamp in front of the green, and lastly the greens. the greens were mostly not in good shape, alot of scarring and one where weeds had just taken over the edge. the holes were also cut in the hardest locations possible on most if not all putting greens. each hole was just a foot or less from a slope or the greens themselves were sloped such that if you missed the hole, say bye bye to your ball, you're off the green. i like a challenge but this was definitely insane. if you made it through the round with fewer than 6 three-putts, you're better than me I guess.
Poor course condition
Pace of play was great but I shortly realized that was due to no one wanting to play here. Fairways and greens were in poor conditions. Greens were scorched and ran extremely hot.
One and done
The course layout and views on the back 9 are about the only positives....But that’s about it. It’s in AWFUL shape. The tee boxes were terrible, the fairways were patchy and the greens were beat the heck up. I felt like I needed a helmet on the front 9 with the sprayers out in full force on a Saturday morning. The gnats were buzzing around your face all morning, too. This was one of those places where I just couldn’t wait for the round to be over. It’s in dire need of alittle TLC.?I’ll never play here again
Greens were in pretty bad shape. Lot of leaves, and wet areas. It was cloudy and the bugs (Mosquitos, ants) were terrible. Pretty view, but a little disappointed with the course.
