Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

“County Course”
As it goes, it’s a “County Course”. With that being said, Morris County, you need to do better. Let’s compare this County course to another County course I frequent, Preakness Valley. Hands down, Preakness has this place beat by ten times over. Sunset has “par” course conditions (pun intended). The cart path is subpar at best. Plenty of holes and massive craters along with just a poor look. Paid 75$ to play and not worth the 75$. If you want to charge 50$ or 60$ the most, then yes, sure it’s worth it. Green and fairways are descent. Tee boxes are good and well maintained. The layout is good no complaints or any issues. But overall, the price isn’t worth it especially when you can head to Wayne and play the “County Course” and it is much more well kept and appealing. Overall not bad will play here from time to time. But with prices sitting at 75$+ there are better options for that price and even less.
$90 (with cart) is steep for a county course, however this course is always very well maintained.
Great layout
Good layout- found friendly 3 some to play with and helpful staff
Selection out of NYC
30 minutes out of NYC. Fantastic valley sunrise view. Friendly to golfers with 20-30 handicap.
Winter golf done well
Can’t complain about a course that is readying for opening day. I saw the new tee boxes and perfect newly rolled greens as they were prepping. Go ply a round at sunset. I love the place
Winter Golf
It’s winter golf. Don’t expect it to be amazing. Many tee boxes are closed and you will hit off turf (~3 holes). Many greens are closed, the holes are 30 yards closer, 1 foot wide, and on the fairway. Everything is soggy and drenched. It’s walking/push cart only. But you’re outside and playing early season golf. Enjoy it.
3 temp greens and hitting on Matts on the par 3s for the winter golf here.
Winterizing the Course
Please note that since this is December, the course is closing down for the winter. A good amount of hold (tee boxes and greens) were closed. I am thinking in preparation for the winter season to preserve for 2024 season.
