Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Terrible
Great course if you have 7 hours to play a par 70 course. Absolutely a joke, place is crawled with seniors and women that walk. I used to play this place 2-3 years ago and I liked it a lot, so I was curious why there is always tee times when everything else is booked. Let's just say I found the hard way. As I said avoid, not worth it
I absolutely love your staff. Tina is the best. Always great to see a friendly face.
Greens
Tour style greens. Frustrating and terrible for hackers. Beware, you will lose 4-5 strokes on your handicap.
Sunset golf
We really like the course.acuracy is king as the rough is brutal and the greens fast. Great shape and visually gorgeous. Play a little slow as holes are spread out and steep hills and lakes seem to be on every hole. Challenging and still fun for a 13 handicapper.
Beware in the bunkers
I like this course very much, but the bunkers were in bad need of maintenance. Very thin and hard, to the point that you could hear the rake scraping off the bottom. Impossible to play a normal shot from them.
Great Golf Day
Had a great time , staff was very friendly. Pace of play could have been better due to the foursome in front of us. But no fault to the staff …..course Conditions were very good.
problems with the course
A beautiful course and the weather conditions we're great. Many of the greens are unfair. Since the course is set on the side of a small mountain most fairways are vertically and/or horizontally challenging. That's understood, but this continues on the greens. It is unfair If you hit a good approach shot and a good putt that turns around and drops you 2-4 feet down the hill. Forget it if you are above the hole.
They also need an active marshal to keep groups moving. Much of the delay can be addressed by teaching new golfers to play ready golf. Errant shots are usually lost due to the 3-4 foot brush thickness. Looking for more than 1-2 minutes is a waste of time. (I should know).
Short, Tough & Fun (Just Like Me)
With the whites at just under 6,000, this should be much easier. But SVGC never met a hill or protected elevated green it didn’t like. That plus quick, large dance floors makes for a very fun day.
Kudos to the grounds crew and staff: y’all are doing a great job this year!
Walkers take note: it’s a hilly amble but well worth it if your calves can hang. The setting is really perfect for a clear, sunny day.
Sunset Valley Great Value
A lovely course with interesting holes and very pretty views. A good value especially if you walk, which I'd a good workout, especially the back nine.
