Fun and challenging 9 holes
Shadyrest was the first black American golf club in the US. It’s an exciting and very well-maintained Nine hole golf course in the heart of Scotch Plains. Great care is taken to maintain the grounds and the customer service in the pro shop is outstanding. You can’t go wrong playing a round in Shady rest.
Great staff and great course
I played just after the rain so everything was soaked. But even in that the condition was still great aside from what Mother Nature delivered. The guy at the counter was also very friendly and helpful. Definitely play here if you’re looking for a nice walkable 9 hole course
Great value!
I like this course because it’s not too crowded, has 9 challenging holes (and many times you can play 18) for a very reasonable price. There are no real amenities but I don’t care about that. The conditions on Tuesday were okay but I found that I lost a lot of balls simply because I couldn’t find them amongst the fallen leaves.
Great course for starters
I played this with my 11yr old, and it was great. It is a short course and was perfect for my young son. The pace of play was also great, we finished in 2 hrs.
Tight short course
Very tight course, very short, but potential to lose a lot of balls. Good course to practice on as price is cheap.
Great Day playing Golf
The starter was so professional ( Greg Sills) the way he treated all the players,, I would recommend this course any time you need to play 9 holes..
Very Nice for a Quick Nine
This is a cute little 9-hole course with a lot of history. If not for Golf Now, we wouldn't even know it existed. My GPS found it OK. There was plenty of room for parking. We thin that since it is only a 9-hole course, most people don't go here since they are mostly looking for 18-hole courses. This course was a pleasant surprise to find.
Too Crowded
The course was in pretty rough shape, but the biggest problem cannot be fixed by maintaining the course better.
The course is in such small space that there is not enough room between the holes and any slight sliced tee shots will land on the tee box of another hole.
Speaking with some of the regulars in the group, it looks like being hit with a golf ball is not uncommon in the course.
In my single 9 holes we had at least half a dozen balls land within 30 yards of us. It feels like more of a safety hazard than anything else.
very good condition and friendly staff.
Not the hardest course but still interesting and quirky.
Played nine - only issue were people bombing the groups in front - but that is not the fault of the course.
Yes - would go back.
great value for money
Good track and very friendly staff.
A few idiots bombing the groups in front but that happens anywhere.
Good value for short 9
First time playing here. For a discount of $20 it was worth it. Fair condition for a public course. Be aware it is very hilly and many blind holes. Narrow fairways and small greens. Got out as a single, behind another single and it played quick walking the course with a pull cart. I don't usually recommend a golf cart but that may help climb the hills and be able to drive ahead to see where the hole is. I didn't like not being able to see where the hole was on more than one shot due to steep inclines. Worth it for a 9 with a friend but not great solo since you can't see what's ahead.
