Overall great for the money
This course is great. The front 9 is very friendly. The back 9 is the most challenging, be prepared to lose some balls if you don't hit the right shot. Greens are a bit slow but leaves room for error. Staff is very friendly.
Old duffer
The staff was very friendly and helpful. I found the front nine to be interesting and fun to play, The back nine was horrible. There were a number of blind shots and there was equipment everywhere. The course is not very well marked so we spent time finding the next hole. I would play the front nine again and pass on the back.
Half golf course, half ski slope
The front nine of this course was very nice and I would recommend that to anyone. The back nine was a mess. There was construction equipment all over the place, there was construction going on under the Ski lifts, it was very difficult to find where the next hole was. It was a mess and I would never recommend it to anyone nor will I ever play that back nine again.
Great Day!
We had a good time, nice people in the club house & great weather too.
It was a fun first trip to see the area where I used to ski years ago. We'll be back!
Would NEVER recommend
The pace of play at this course was horrible due to no rangers enforcing any sort of pace. There were multiple holes that were marked 50 yards further than they actually were. On the back nine there was not a silver for hole where I couldn't hear heavy machinery, and the grounds crew did not stop while playing your ball. Overall very disappointed and would not recommend to anyone, ever. Save yourself some time and money and play somewhere else.
Mahhh...
This course was almost average. We (2 people) go in a round of 9 holes plus cart for $32 total. It was worth playing for that value but I am so glad that we did not pay full price. There are much nicer courses in the area for equivalent pricing.
Fun course
Fun course to play, front nine pretty wide open, back nine will require accurate shots as you go through the ski slopes. You will usually see some wildlife on the course.
Two course in one
I had read other reviews about this course before playing with my son-in-law and his father. It is two different 9 hole courses. The front nine very traditional, in good shape. Basic nice course. The back nine runs through the ski trails, is a little shorter and many of the green are hidden from the tee box. Instructions help but had a great time just going for it and ignoring the "safe" advice. Sometime that paid off, other time not so much, but we had a great time and really enjoyed the course. The back nine hole greens for the most part are quite small so accuracy on approach shots is required. For the deal we got with Golf Now it was a great deal. And any day playing golf is a good day. Enjoy the course. I would definitely like to play this course again - lots of fun.
Turkey Sighting
The price I received through Golf Now made this a good deal!! I could not in good conscience recommend this golf course to anyone at regular price. There were a few good holes on the track but the descriptions of the holes were poor and inadequate. The greens were pretty good but the fairways on the back side was nonexistent. If you have the opportunity to play the course I would highly recommend you play with someone that has played it before. The staff was very friendly and the the cheeseburger and fries were very good.
Nice course
Good inexpensive course not too far out of the twin cities.
I love afton!
I have always enjoyed playing at Afton. Well worth the money
Excellent value
The course is really a ski resort serving double duty as golf course summertime. All things considered, the course is an excellent value and with the exception of a few holes that would be considered "unusual" is an enjoyable and scenic experience. Friendly staff and well-maintained considering the difficulties on the back nine. Would recommend to anyone enjoying an up-and-down experience.
Be prepared for a change in difficulty!
The course was in fantastic shape, from the clubhouse, to the fairways, to the greens. Front nine starts as a pretty typical round with mainly flat surfaces throughout each hole, some rolling hills make their way in from time to time. Be prepared for the challenge to ramp up after the turn. The back nine is situated amongst the system of ski lifts and hills and presents a much greater challenge. Playing through the first time leaves you with quite a few blind tee shots. Fortunately, the clubhouse offers a guide on how to approach each of those holes so you can hone your approach for future rounds. Highly recommended course in my opinion with scenic views of the Mississippi River Valley, friendly service and very affordable green fees/cart fees.
Great setting
Fun course in a pretty setting. Friendly staff. Lots of wildlife throughout the course was pretty neat also.
Front Nine Fine, Back Not So Much
The back nine at this course really doesn't have any business calling itself a golf course. It's a ski park that allows the Afton Group to pull revenue during summer months. I love elevated tee's, strange layouts and short par fours but this back nine isn't a real set of golf holes. I guess I should have known that. It should be noted that the hilly, diverse terrain on the back is littered with piping, chair lift parts and all other types of excess ski equipment.
Tale of two 9's
The front 9 is nice and plays like your standard course. The back 9, as well documented, weaves through the ski hills. It takes accuracy and smart play. I suspect people that don't like the back 9 are people that just want to blast away with their driver all day long. Driver is almost always the wrong club off tee on the back. The course provides a nice caddy like guide for the back 9 suggesting the smart shots, follow them. That said, there are a few spots on the back that just aren't fair where even the slightest bit of inaccuracy can put you OB (including hitting the green and rolling off the side to OB on one green). With the right mindset the back is a scenic fun challenge of placement and strategy golf which is a nice mix of play.
Love this place!
This is the kind of course that plays well, is challenging yet fun, and makes you feel at home! The staff is extremely friendly!
Afton golf
Short course overall Front 9 is average with good green conditions While back 9 is scenic most holes are short partially under construction You are basically playing on ski slopes Greens are rounded and slope away from the greens causing approach shots that are slightly off to roll off the greens sometime out of bounds worth a play for the views
Great course
Front nine is completely different compared to the back nine. Very cool course, ski area in the winter so lots of elevation change. Greens are tricky, well designed with some nuance that makes you want to play again so you know the breaks! I would highly recommend this course.
My thoughts exactly. Well said.
