Putnam County Golf Course
About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

Too Bad....
Always start with the positive. Course conditions are much improved since I played here many many years ago. Lots of changes for the better. Greens and fairways are good. Layout on the front nine can be hairy with holes back and forth and balls flying across fairways. Back nine more fun. But my son and I bailed after 4+ hours and 16 holes after literally waiting on every shot. Groups had entire holes open in front of them. No rangers to be found. If they were out there they would have seen guys doing things with golf carts that you'd have to see to believe. Guys yelling to each other across fairways. Not sure how golf course operators can solve the problem of people who think they're playing golf going out and clogging up the course. Guys just out to drink and act like idiots and shoot videos. Don't get me wrong I like a few beers during the round. But I'm there to play not drink. It's too bad because it seems weekend golf on public courses is a joke if you tee off after 9am. And I wish there was an answer for beginners who have ZERO etiquette. Learn how to handle yourself. Know when to pick up. If you have a golf cart USE it. Maybe start with an executive course or par 3. And don't give lessons during the round. Not the place. These days you have to pay premium prices to avoid the nonsense. I'm glad I can play during the week at times. I won't be back at Putnam anytime soon because the management clearly doesn't care what goes on out on the course and it's a shame. I'd pay more than the $66 green fee if I knew it was a solid golf course and not a playground. Maybe after someone crashed a cart or flips it over it will get their attention.
Solid round; good change of pace
Decent break from the monotonous Westchester courses. Place is super wet though, otherwise decent condition. I played on a horribly windy day which was a drag. The greens are confusing and challenging, but can be frustrating. They seemed to roll true. It’s a tough walk through some parts but they do have a new cart fleet.
Hazardous
Most tee boxes face other wholes making it almost impossible to enjoy an entire round without worrying about a golf ball flying in your direction. My group alone was almost hit about 3 times. Not the courssy fault but, horrible golf edict by other golfers, huge turnoff. Definitely not the golfers you want to be paired with. The two gentlemen I was paired with have been playing there for years and decided that was their last round at Putnam. Starter guy in the morning had a bad attitude with most people checking in for the 30 minutes I was putting on the practice green. He was a very distasteful person.
Wet to be expected but Great condition for April 1st
Putnam Golf Course
Only problem was that the starter needs an attitude adjustment in friendliness
Slow players took long hours to finish 18 holes.
Anyhow, the golf course was well maintained greens and fairways. If there is another hot deal on GolfNow, I will come again.
Nice day at Putnam County
It's a fun track. Some interesting greens. Greens were in great shape and ran very smooth. A bit on the fast side. We got out as a twosome at 10am - with foursomes in front and in back. Finished in 4:15 but felt slower waiting each hole - but we were a twosome behind a foursome. Cart girl was present. Willing to play there again.
Very solid course
Right on par for pricing with other courses in area. Course is pretty tight overall and greens can be tough but very nice and fun course overall
