Poor Management Experience

Course should have been a 5* experience, but the woman in pro shop made for a very poor start to my round. I arrived early for my 2 pm tee time. I was made to pay full rate and told the rate I was quoted was 9 hole rate- I went to website during round and yes indeed the website shows a twilight rate.

Course was very good, front 9 is Ross that has had several greens redone (# 4 for sure is not Ross). Back 9 is the newer 9 and built on the hilly more scenic terrain. The Ross greens (1,2, 5, 6, and 7) are worth the trip alone. Conditions were very good.

If you go, confirm price in advance and hopefully you will have a better experience.

Hidden Gem

I have been playing Thendara for almost 20 years during visits to Old Forge to stay with family friends. I assumed that most golfers in the Adirondacks know about the course but realized it had no reviews on Golf Advisor. I can't recommend the course enough. It is always in spectacular condition and boasts two completely distinct 9's which are each challenging in their own right. The front 9 is a Donald Ross design that is fairly open but with very tough greens. The contours on holes 1, 7, and 9 are diabolical and a 2 putt is victory. The back 9 meanders through the woods with views of the Moose River and requires more accuracy off the tee. The pro, Rich Chapman, always has a smile on his face and the staff is welcoming. I have played 3 other course in the Central Adirondacks and Thendara clearly stands out as the top place to play.
