Reviews
Wish I played in "Golf Season"
I liked this course. It was not too difficult or long, so it was good for me. I could have used better weather, but, playing in February in NC, you never know. Grass was dormant brown, but playable, bunkers had plenty of sand, and only a few wet spots from previous day's rain. I did not have any food there, since restaurant not open while I was there. Staff was friendly and helpful. I would like to play it again in a warmer season when the course has more color.
Great Value
This course is great for all levels of play. The greens are kept up very nicely as well as the rest f the course. The staff are extremely courteous. This course was great to play even after a whole week of rain .
Emerald Isle NC
3 nine hole courses. Good layout and course was in very good condition. Would recommend.
excellent course
First time playing this course and we had a great time. Excellent conditions and very friendly staff. There is another 9 holes i have not played yet and definitely planning on going back to do just that. Would highly recommend people to play here.
Great beach course
Best course in the Bogue Banks, NC beach area. It's not manicured but well maintained, good greens, and friendly staff. It's a pretty good challenge with long par 3s and a good diversity of par 4 holes. A little pricey but you can get a good deal with a coupon. I'd play it again for sure.
Needs better maintenance
We selected Star Hill because our home course was hosting a tournament and we had elected not to play. We also had a large storm the day before and knew that Star Hill always drained very well and wouldn't be too muddy. We knew upon booking that they had aerated earlier in the week, but unfortunately, they hadn't mowed the greens in at least 2 days and what sand they had topdressed with had washed off from the rain. Needless to say, we instituted a mandatory 2 putt rule once you were on the green, because of their rough condition. The wet summer has made their sandy fairways lush and green, but unfortunately, their rough and tree lined areas are quickly becoming very weedy and overgrown. Bunkers haven't seen new sand in years, and the bunkers' edges are becoming overgrown and do not look like they have been cut for months.
10 years ago, this used to be a course that one could argue was well worth $50+/round due to its location in a tourist destination and good conditioning. However, as many have, it is falling into disrepair and looking very rough around the edges. There are at least a few other courses that are in much better shape at the $35-45 price point than the $55-65 being charged here, as even the $36 aeration special was about $10 too high given it's condition. Hope that the owners will put some money for the man hours to clean this course up.
Should have been free course had just been aerated.
Should have refunded our money since the course had been arated, putting was impossible.
Had a great round
It was awesome, as soon as I drove on the property I was told that would they bring a cart right to me and I went off immediately.
Nice change of pace.
The course makes you think on almost every shot, which I really appreciate. If you pull driver every hole, you'll find yourself with some short shots into the green, but you can also find yourself in a lot of unnecessary trouble. Lay up off the tee to a comfortable distance and you can really attack the course. The greens were rolling GREAT! They were soft, but quick and true. As we played later in the day there were some indentions around the hole but nothing terrible. I booked two people through golfnow.com and ended up getting a third to come along, but the third had to pay $69 because I didn't pre-book it. $45 is a decent value for this course, but $69 is too high. Overall a fun test, but I won't play if it's more than $45.
Enjoyable afternoon
Great time
course 10 min from vacation home
golfnow hot deal too good to pass up.
will definitely return
Overpriced
This course is way overpriced for the conditions. There are too many other courses in the area available to play that charge less and are in much better condition. The staff is not concerned with providing good customer service and seem indifferent to golfers unless they are members. I have played 4 and 5 star courses for the rates that Star Hill charges, this is a 2 and half to three star course at best. Unless you can get a discounted rate you are better off playing any other course in the area. I have only played this course a few times and always at a discounted rate, if you get a discounted rate be prepared to be treated poorly by staff. The only marketing strength this course seems to have is that it has good drainage, come on , really?
Just Ok
Played a 4some here on vacation.
Pros: The course is in pretty good shape and maintained. Course layout isn't bad but plays pretty easy. Good course for a novice golfer as some of the fairways are pretty wide open. Course was pretty empty so pace of play wasn't a problem.
Cons: Biggest con was the front desk pro shop service. Guy behind the desk was arrogant and had treated us as though we were intruding from the start. We shrugged it off and went to start play. 6 holes in, 4 holes in it started to thunder and drizzle. After the 7th, lightning made us go to the clubhouse just in time for a couple hours of torrential downpours. After an hour with no end in sight, we asked for a rain check for the next day (pretty standard where we are from). A "rain check" was offered but only if we paid an additional $35/person. We asked if there was another time that we could come back without having to pay to play again. He told us he was doing us a favor by offering us the discounted rate and refused to compromise. We decided to stay at the 19th hole for a little longer and eventually finished are play after two hours. Recommend going to the nearby Country Club of Crystal Coast.
Greens in great shape...
Star Hill still has excellent putting greens. Played two other neighbor courses, the Greens are not even close to Star Hill.
Golfers BEWARE
After reading the horrible reviews about this course my father-in-law and I decided to play anyway. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT play this course. It is over priced for the condition of the course and overall the place was just a horrible experience. The staff was rude. The course rules are a joke. We were 75 yards from a green and about to take a shots when a disgusting individual drove up to the green, lolly gagged around, hooked up a water hose, and started watering the green. Are you kidding me? Needless to say, I will NEVER play this course again in my life.
Grouchy
The guy in the pro shop checking people in was grumpy. Our twosome was on time and ready to tee off but we were informed by the grumpy guy in the pro shop the other twosome they paired us up with was late and we would have to wait. The course was not busy at all. It was a Wednesday afternoon, 27 hole course and maybe 10 foursomes on the whole course. I thought he was kidding. Finally our other twosome we got stuck with showed up and we teed off 20 minutes late. A few holes into our round we are getting pushed by a twosome so we let them through and low and behold right behind them another twosome. So we let them through. A few holes later another twosome and we didn't have to waive these guys through because they skipped in front of us while we were on the green. So we had to wait to tee off even though we were on time, and get involuntarily paired up with a couple hackers but the grumpy guy has no problem letting all these other twosomes tee off after us. The fairways were in bad shape. Every hole is pretty much straight. Don't waste your time unless you get a super cheap price.
Nice course only at a discounted price
Overall decent course. I would only play there if i'm paying a discounted rate. Staff needs some improvement on manners instead of being just grouchy.
challenging course with good fairways
The course was in great condition even though several greens were too sandy
Excellent condition!!!
The only the wrong with this course is the staff!! They were very rude, and seemed to have a problem with the price I payed on this site... Other than that it was a great course.
the colars and rough are just not that great.
The course is great because they have 27 holes, so you can always get out. The staff is generally helpful but do not seem to be thrilled to be there.
Sorry about maint guy getting in the way. We try to keep it to a minimum but sometimes these bentgrass greens need a quick syringing to keep them from wilting in hot weather. When they are showing signs of stress, it can take only a few minutes to cause damage. Give us a call and let us make it up to you.
