Greens just punched
Course was in very good condition considering rain for many days, including the day we played and that greens on the back nine had recently been punched. This is acourse that the staff / ground crew really. Care about.
I'll start by saying that the old UNC Finley course was my favorite of the three major university courses in the RDU area. I had played it about 10 times over the course of a couple of years. I loved it. Just like before, the staff is fantastic and friendly, the conditions are great, and the practice area is a great spot to warm up and get ready for your round. The new putting course is a fun addition to the practice area.
Now for the redesign. I'd put it as the 4th best university course in the area. Yes, I'd even put Keith Hills ahead of it. I was hoping to be blown away, but I really hated what they did.
First, why start on a par 3? It's so weird and it's not a fun way to start your day. At the very least, flip the 9s.
Second, 3 par 3's in the first 6 holes? Who's idea was this? Was Davis Love high when he designed this? Just some of the most awful and cramped routing I've ever seen on a course. Tee boxes bumped right up against greens (Or close to it). The 6th/8th green area is literally going to get someone killed. You couldn't have placed two greens closer to each other if you tried. I felt uneasy putting on the 6th green while the guys on 8 were hitting their approach shots. The 3rd hole feels like "Hey, we ran out of room so let's just squeeze a 100 yard throwaway hole right here".
Truly not a fan and not sure if I'll ever be back. Luckily the holes that now make up the new back 9 haven't been tinkered with too much. But the removal of the old 11 and 12 is a huge mistake IMO. 11 was my favorite hole out there on the old course.
Overall, not impressed. The actual conditions were great and the people who work there were awesome, but the routing is a real turn off and turned a really fun course into a course that I'll likely pass up in the future. Especially for the price they're charging.
Had an amazing time playing this course. There definitely was put a lot of love & detail into making it a challenging yet achievable course. Will 100% recommend to play for any golfer wanting to experience the essence of Carolina golf. Will play it again 100x
Such a great time
Played here for the first time and it was such a nice setup. Greens were tough on me but it was a great experience.
A fun track
Early April conditions were as expected. Sandy grrens. Cart path only. But a great layout and a nice practice facility.
New greens awesome
First time playing since they reopened after a greens Renovation and a course redesign. The greens were great considering they’ve only be open 6 months. They are very firm still so be prepared for ball not to spin/stop quickly. Green complexes have more severe slopes than before redesign making for some interesting putts.
My favorite course to play in Durham
UNC Finley is a well manicured course. Much thought and pride is visible throughout the course. The moment you drive into the parking lot, there is a sense of a common sense flow . The proshop is well lit and stocked with all possible needs. The green fees include use of the driving range, which has many stalls and a well marked distances, the chipping and putting greens can accommodate many golfers. The comfortable electric carts have a display with course layout and distance information. I look forward to golfing there again. If you haven't played a round at UNC Finley, you will wonder why you didn't go sooner.
Great spot
Just a great experience overall. The putting and short game area is prestige the range has plenty of space.
Only bad thing is that they are still working on their food and beverage space. So make sure you bring your own drinks and snacks.
Thank you for your kind words about our golfing facilities, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by our food and beverage area improvements. We're working hard to enhance that aspect and appreciate your understanding.
Love the new layout
A little weird starting off on a par 3 but I kind of like it after playing here a couple times. New greens are awesome? Very fun and challenging layout!
Logan - First Time
Very nice course, redesigned so GPS did not work on the course. They need to get this updated.
No grill/bar area at time I played.
Wanted to like it but couldn't
First time playing Finley since the remodel and I really, really wanted to like it but just couldn't get behind some of the changes. Starting with a par 3 feels odd and having 3 out of the first 6 holes as par 3 really takes any kind of thr natural flow put of the course. Multiple tee boxes are stacked right next to greens making for very cramped feel. The 6th green is a stones throw away from the par 5 8th green making for an unsettling feeling while around the green on the 6th. If someone pushes their approach into 8, it could lead to a serious problem for anyone on the 6th green. I also think the course would greatly benefit from flipping the nines. Some of the new green designs are a bit silly with huge mounds in the center but they are in great shape. With all that being said, it's still a fun course in pretty good condition considering time of year and weather. The staff is great as always and the practice facilities are top notch. I really wish I could get behind the redesign more but sadly I just can't.
Thank you for your kind words about our golf course setup, and we're glad you had a great experience even with the challenging greens. We hope to welcome you back soon for another round!
