Golf Advisor: Top Courses in North Carolina
Nice and friendly staff, very nice clubhouse and pro shop! Great course design! Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in great shape. A few of the fringes had a couple small dead/brown spots, a few of the bunkers were in rough shape because of the rain and washout. Other than that, I was very pleased
Greens perfect. Fairways nice. Layout is second to none. Plenty of tee options and just a fun place to play. Course well maintained making it one of my favorites.
We were not told they had just aerated the greens...
It used to be nice
Looks like they are either struggling from winter or just don’t put the time in anymore. They had just punched greens which is fine, but fairways and collars are rough. Most courses in the area are back to green not this one. Most tee boxes had no grass and was hard as a rock to get a tee in. Fairways dead circles everywhere, and now they have a ton of “Native” areas (areas they just don’t mow anymore).
Jackson course at ROCK BARN
Played the course many times.... not long at 6000 yds, but has some trouble in spots, kind of a cool hilly layout.
Course was in good shape . Lots of fun holes. Greens rolled well, and staff was very friendly. Enjoy playing here when I can.
What a great course! Elevation changes, excellent greens, some visually challenging holes. Very scenic.
It’s been over a year since I played RB Jackson but I’d play it every week if I could. There were 12 in our group and no one voiced any disappointments. Challenging but fair layout, great shape for winter play, friendly staff. 7 of us ate in the restaurant, very good. Highly recommend this course.
with the deal from golfnow... there's absolutely nothing I could say bad about RB. staff was friendly and very helpful (first time there) Amazing course!
Love the layout
I enjoyed playing this course especially for $30 ! Some holes were absolutely beautiful and a lot of tee boxes set up high so you could see layout of holes. Greens on front side seemed a bit smaller than on the backside but not too small. I’m not used to quick greens so I didn’t enjoy the speed of the greens. They have recently been verticut but overall in good shape. Not the most exciting greens but good. Course was in good shape and fairways pretty wide open. Definitely would come back or suggest playing this course especially at the $30 rate !!!!
The Poor man’s course that is not up to the hype
Let me start by saying we played this course after a couple of days of rain so the ground was a little soggy. The layout is good and there are three stunning holes. However, the 7th has some sewage problem and the smell was horrific to say the least, a few of the greens were pretty terrible condition considering the reputation. It’s not a course I would rush back to, especially since the Jones course is used to hype up the Jackson, beware that this is the public ‘poor man’ course.
Love this course
Great course. Amazing carts with covers for a chilly day. Played alone and got done in under 4 hours.
Well this course is usually pretty good and worthy of 5 stars. How someone can give this 5 stars right now obviously doesn't play much. The course was 3 and half stars. Fairways and bunkers were great. But the greens were ridiculous. The worst I've ever seen them. 9 is almost completely gone...dead spots everywhere and they charge almost $50 to play there with greens like that I would be ticked. Would I play again...not this year unless it's in call when maybe greens come back in.
Gotta play this place
I haven't reviewed this place in a while, but it is still my number one place to play. Get the twilight rate. They've went up in price since they've become mostly private. They have two courses, the Jones course is private.
Best conditions, great carts, great clubhouse. Only place I'd consistently pay $3 for a hot dog because they are that good. $8 for the salad/soup bar, but it's worth it.
Now driving range balls are included so you could spend whatever time you want before and after your round practicing if you wish.
As with all Tom Jackson designs, as long as you can drive it 250 yards you're going to have a Pitching Wedge or less into the green. No big draws or fades are needed. Some holes look like you need to...but you don't Every shot is straight.
If you in the area you have to play this course.
First Class Facility
What a fantastic place to play golf. Everyone on staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Range and putting green were in excellent shape, and the course was phenomenal. Worth every bit of the hour+ drive from Asheville. Top-notch!
