Back to flawless greens
Played here a bunch a few years ago when greens were all perfect (and lightning fast usually) as it made up for the rest of the course conditions being fair at best. Greens weren’t great for a while so I found other places to play but I took a flyer on a midweek Hot Deal and am happy to say this was the best I’ve seen it out there. Greens were all flawless (and a much fairer speed), tee boxes and fairway were in better shape than before too. Still some hard pan areas to deal with in spots but this isn’t Pinehurst we are talking about here. Also larger pro shop was welcome surprise. Definitely will consider playing again soon.
Nice layout BUT…
Horrible condition of greens and fairways. For spring conditions end everything is lush and green this course had burnt out greens and dirt fairways. The course has potential as its layout was good but you would have to put a lot of work into restoring it before I would rate it more than 2 stars.
Do no play here!
This is one of the worst courses I’ve ever played in my entire life. The tee boxes were super uneven and barely had any grass. All the fairways had no grass to hit off of, and were filled with nothing but Poana and weeds. Half of the greens were dead, and had large chunks of poana that threw your ball off line. The layout is the worst I’ve seen. Will never play here again!
SGCC
Greens and tees in great shape
Fairways starting to go dormant that is expected
Greens are somewhat unfair sloping down on all sides. And they are FAST
Otherwise my golf partner and I love this coursr
Unexpected Surprise(s)
I was impressed with the overall conditions of the course and the layout. Greens were in good shape - tee boxes and fairways need some work. I was not impressed with the lack of decorum with the two groups in front of me. First off - a 5 hour round should be unacceptable at any club. Also, the foul mouths on a bunch of old men withiin 50 yards of the occupied womens tee's was inappropriate. Al;so, refusing to let a single player, play through, was pretty selfserving despite the #8 course rule posted in the carts - "let faster players play through". Other than the clowns ahead of me - it was a nice outing. Just don't know if I have the time or patience to go back... especially if a round takes 5 hours.
SGCC rocks
With the exception of very fast and sloping greens I love this course for all the reasons above
I hesitate to tell too many friends because I don’t want the course to become crowded
Good value for the money
Worth the $30 you’ll pay for a round. Very laid back people and play. Course itself is really rough though. Ground is very very hard and the ball will roll forever and often takes very bad bounces. Sometimes a drive landing in the middle of the fairway will kick in random directions and go out of bounds. Can be frustrating since not all landing zone are in view of the tee box turning a great drive into a two stroke penalty for a lost ball. Greens are the same and a missed putt long will continue to roll for a mile. Sands traps aren’t worth playing out of. I take free drop from most of them.
However this is a fantastic learners course. If you are just starting for been gone from the game a while I highly recommend this course to tune up. Typically not very busy and the people are nice.
