Wet day - incomplete round
Hard to review fully. Arrived to find only 13 holes in play. Round was sandwiched between two comps but didn't feel hurried. Pro was nice about it and said it was fine to play extra holes again to make up for those that were closed, but the weather was bad and worsening so it was difficult play on waterlogged fairways and rough. Very boggy in places.
Disappointed
Was looking forward to playing this course after trying multiple other courses around Stockport but I was really disappointed, not a nice greeting from the staff, didn’t seem interested at all, found out that only 13 holes were open, was allowed to play holes 1,2,3 again however, had to play off winter mats in the fairway and on the tee box, ground was absolutely soaked and boggy everywhere with thick mud. Quite expensive for what it is, nothing particularly special with any holes just standard hole layouts. One plus was it was very quiet hardly saw a soul so didn’t have any pace of play issues, they also had ball cleaners on nearly every hole.
Interesting course in good condition
Hazel Grove is a local course which I try and play at least once a year.
It’s an interesting parkland design with subtle elevation changes. Water is in play on 7 holes and the drive on holes 3 and 8 have to go over a stream, which off the back tee is quite intimidating.
The greens were a little slow but that may be due to either recent annual maintenance or it was midweek however they are USGA standard and are good fun.
Lunch afterwards was decent and not expensive.
Friday Frolics
Hazel grove golf course is a fabulous golfing gem. Not only was the playing area up to a high standard but the journey through 18 holes was enjoyable. A lot of effort has been given to make the course attractive. Water features have fountains and are manicured and tres are varied and beautiful. Flower beds maintained throughout. A lot of effort has been given to make this a great golfing experience.
This is a great golf course.
Excellent
Superb course, great layout. Considering the time of year
the greens are presented to a very high quality. Pro shop very friendly on arrival. All five of us really enjoyed the day.
Good parking facilities; friendly staff in pro shop; practice area nice and close to the car park although only long enough to hit shorter clubs. Course was steady away, nothing too tricky although some narrow greens require you to be accurate. Winter tees were way too far forward, in particular one par five was only 400 yards long! Greens had obviously suffered with ice / snow (and perhaps people walking on them in snow?) but despite this all proper greens were in play (maybe this will end up being a bad call in future). Definitely easy on the legs as there isn't much elevation change. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that I felt was missing but I expected a little bit more from this golf course having been voted Golf Club of the Year 2022 by England Golf. However, it was pleasant enough for £20!
Hidden Gem
Loved this course a lot! Not the longest, but each hole was ‘quirky’ and as with all good golf courses would love to olay it again now we know all the hidden hazards, layout.
Great challenging course
If you get this course for a hot deal it is worth every penny. It has a great combination of challenging holes and interesting par 3s. This will challenge golfers of every level as some of the pins are a bit narrow so your approach shots have to be really accurate.
Slow play
The only problem was the slow play due to a 9 hole competition that the players continued on after they finished, and the pro shop did not inform us that this was happening it took 5 hours to complete the 18 holes. The players in front did not let the faster players through that were smaller groups of players
This was the 2nd time we have visited Hazel Grove and I was very pleased with the course, great layout, fairways in very good condition, greens had been treated so not at their best. But really enjoyed the course and would not hesitate to go back.
Disappointed
An interesting course with some aesthetic holes, however let down by awful greens that were slow, bumpy with patchy grass cover.
Overpriced
Decided to go back to Hazel Grove after a couple of years away and couldn't believe the lack of care it has been awarded. Greens woolly, fairways and tees uncut whilst no-one in the pro shop. There has been a lot of bad press about golf courses taking advantage of visiting golfers and in this case it is true. How can they charge £50 per person for this. Never again.
Hazel Grove Golf Course review
Great course the first 4 holes were closed due to the winter weather.
Very flat straight forward course, some nice holes I enjoyed playing it and will be back.
Please turn on the airline to clean shoes next time.
Hazel Grove Golf course
First time played, lovely course, very wet though. The first three holes were out of play.
Enjoyed the course and will look to play again.
One minor niggle the airline for shoe cleaning wasn't on.
Having looked into the club winning Golf Club of the Year it would seem this was for the club itself and it's personal standards and work in the community. All of the people we spoke to were pleasant and approachable so I can see that the club deserves the recognition.
