Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Very well maintain course with moderate difficulties.
It was my first time playing this course. Got a before noon Hotdeal and 20% Mother's Day discount on top it and it was a great deal.
We had branch before the game. Food was good and very well priced.
Surprised to learn that practice range ball was included, and real grass at the range. The range was in very good condition at about 11am.
The course is moderately challenging, with a lot of bunkers. Green is not easy to read. The course was under construction in many areas where grass between tees and fairway is under repair. The good things is if balls go into the area, it's easy to spot but the sand would stop the ball from bouncing forward during a mishit.
There are nice views of the ocean at many of the holes but they will soon get blocked in the next few months by new houses getting built.
Wished there is ball washing station since I don't remember seeing any.
Course is under total construction
Save your money this course was under total construction lots of sand being moved. Gas lines, water lines and sewer pipes being installed. I know the new home construction needs to be completed but it’s not fair to charge the price and have to deal with mounds of sand and heavy equipment running the complete round. Monterey has many fine courses so stay away from here for about 6 months. When it’s finished it will be a large eye sore as all the ocean views will be gone for the golfers. Just someone cooking in a new kitchen 😳. All views of Santa Cruz, Pacific grove, Monterey Bay. Your view will be a new two story house with large windows facing the golf course. Just make sure your home owners insurance covers off property damage as the Milgard windows are not cheap.
Greens need work, fairways fine. All the sand and dug up areas are a mess, better before with just weeds.
Great conditions needs more value
Great course conditions
There is a ton on construction going on that makes it it one to avoid for now. I guess there will be lots of houses along the course forever altering the course/value. Entry road is old beat up and bumpy I hope they repave it once the construction is complete.
Staff are a mixed bag sometimes great sometimes aloof
No starter for twilight and no one on the course helping play.
When it’s hitting on all cylinders it’s worth it but maybe not at the moment.
Great Layout but a lot of construction
The layout of the course as well as the conditions of the fairways and greens are really nice. But there is a lot of construction going on. Off of the fairways a lot of dirt areas and a lot of new housing projects on the property. The noise of the construction can be distracting. Some of the bunkers lack sand.
The views are great and the layout is really a lot of fun with great bunker placement and quite difficult greens. The greens are fast and very undulated.
Overall a great and enjoyable course with some current restrictions due to the construction sites. Value for money with golfnow hot deal teetime is unbelievable. Will come back to play Bayonet as well.
Great views and Great Golf
Too bad there is so much new construction adding homes all over the course. Seems like there was 50% fairways/greens and 50% areas being renovated, repaired, or built upon. Hope these courses don’t become more like the unaffordable Pebble Beach courses when all the development is completed 🥺
Good test of golf
I have played Black Horse previously and enjoyed the layout, the views and the challenges But on this trip there was so much construction of homes and access road that it detracted from the round. In fact as admittedly senior I missed the fifth hole and jumped in on 8.
Beautiful Blackhorse
The two courses continue to be well maintained.
On this particular day, very crowded on Blackhorse. Need for a Marshall to control golfer pace
Love Black horse
They are renovating and building homes around the courses but it doesn't affect my enjoyment playing golf here
Green are too slick
Beautiful layout, challenging holes, good value.
Greens are too fast and have way too much slope and undulations. 3 putts are common and 4 putts possible. Simply no way to stop the ball when above the pin.
Completely unfair in many cases.
Awesome
The course was in great condition even after the rain. Highly recommend
Distractions
Too many on course distractions. Tractors, red fences,so much ground under repair takes away the beauty of this once great course. Not to mention all the home going up around it.
Muddy mess
The course was being redone? Because of the rain and the torn up course it was a total mess! To add insult it was cart path only so it was even worse. One of our players stepped in a deep mud hole and buried her shoe. Another player slipped and fell going down to the second hole green area.
Little Buddy
Course was in good shape, tough if you are out of position around the greens....
Lot of construction!
Beautiful location ruined by too many homes being built !
Have played here since the 70’s … lots of construction in progress around and on course !
Staff - poor greeting, and not friendly!
With so many choices of places to play and a Troon facility- do better on customer service please!
