Best courses of the New York Golf Trail

The New York Golf Trail is a collection of upstate, public-access golf courses in places such as Lake Placid, Saratoga Springs, Cooperstown and Rochester's Finger Lakes. There are 16 golf courses in all, ranging from historic courses such as The Leatherstocking Golf Course, located right around the corner from the Baseball Hall of Fame, to the new Jack Nicklaus-designed Timber Banks Golf Course in central New York.

The Finger Lakes region is the most populous and golf-rich location, anchored by the city of Rochester. The area is home to fishing and water sports, wineries and other outdoor pursuits. Saratoga Springs is most famous for its horse racing history and hosts a 40-day series beginning in late July each year, right down the street from the new Saratoga National Golf Club. Known more for the 1980 Winter Olympics and the "Miracle on Ice," Lake Placid boasts the most breathtaking Adirondack Mountains golf courses.

Among the golf courses on the trail to make Golf Magazine's 2010 "Best in State" rankings were The Leatherstocking Golf Course, The Sagamore, Colgate University's Seven Oaks Golf Club, Saratoga National Golf Club and Ravenwood Golf Club.
