Brian Silva works his magic on the Starboard Course at The Captains Golf Course on Cape Cod

BREWSTER, Mass. -- Technically, the Starboard Course can be considered the older of the two layouts at The Captains Golf Course.

The 6,776-yard course is a mix of 10 holes from Brian Silva's original routing that Golf Digest honored as the country's best new course in 1985 and eight more holes built in 1999 when Silva returned to design a second layout. This unique mix of new and old melds seamlessly into one of Cape Cod's best public facilities.

The town of Brewster owns the 36-hole club in the lower Cape, although its Port Course and Starboard Course are kept in much better condition than your average muni. While lacking an "oh wow" hole, the Starboard Course relies on a steady diet of strong holes in a natural, wooded setting to keep golfers coming back.

"What I like about the (club) is there is no development, there's nothing else around," member Pat Eggers said during a round earlier this summer. "I play some of the private courses around here, and I like this one better than most of them.

The Port Course might be slightly tougher than the Starboard Course at The Captains Golf Course. The two municipal courses owned by the town of Brewster, Mass. in lower Cape Cod feel almost like mirror images. But there's little doubt that the best golf hole on the property is No. 8 on the Port Course. Jason Scott Deegan shows us no. 8 and much more of the Port Course in this photo gallery.
With six par 3s and two short par 4s, Bay Pointe Club in Onset, Mass. seems to be ripe for the taking, but it rarely happens. Low scores tend to be derailed by long par 3s, rolling topography, 38 bunkers and two ponds. The operative word about playing it is fun. Thanks to the par 3s, golfers get a couple extra chances at a hole in one. It's one of the best values of golf on or near Cape Cod.
