LA JOLLA, Calif. -- There may be no more coveted round of golf in the American municipal system than the South at Torrey Pines Golf Course, an annual host to the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open, as well as the 2008 2021 U.S. Opens. It's also unquestionably one of the most scenic public or resort courses on the west coast . Between the toughening by Rees Jones prior to 2008, and the softening of the North Course by Tom Weiskopf in 2016, it's a significantly tougher round for amateurs. The only real water hazard on the south comes on the approach shot to 18, but the course defends itself with smaller, well-defended greens, narrow fairways and plenty of bunkers. It's more expensive than the North and doesn't get as many annual rounds, but it rivals Bethpage Black as the best muni you can play in America. The lore of the 2008 Tiger Woods-Rocco Mediate duel in the U.S. Open has certainly elevated its status to a course that all Tiger fans must play.

San Diego residents have it pretty good as they have access to this course and the North at fairly affordable rates. Playing the South and North courses for non-residents is a little tricky, so we created this how-to-play guide to provide some tee times and golf package tips.
