CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort is right at the top of the list in inland luxury in northern California
SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- California is full of luxurious golf resorts from Pebble Beach to Grand Del Mar, but right at the top of the list is CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort, located near San Jose in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
CordeValle, a private club accessible only to resort guests, is set on 1,700 remote acres. Wineries are abundant here, and the resort has an extensive wine list in its clubhouse and restaurants. From the golf course you can view the 85-acre Clos LaChance Winery, which also has free tasting for resort guests.
While the acres at the disposal of the resort are expansive, there are few guest units (approximately 45 total) but they are large (between 550-750 square feet). They sit on a hillside overlooking the course and mountains and are a short walk or shuttle to the main clubhouse, which is also home to a spa. There are three dining options at the resort: One Iron Bar, located in the center of the main resort building, fine dining at Il Vigneto and casual dining outside the golf clubhouse at Lion's Peak Grill.
Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the CordeValle golf course, which can play more than 7,300 yards from the back tees and winds up and down hillsides, and through sycamore trees and creeks. The most famous hole is no. 8, which plays as the 17th hole during the PGA Tour's Frys.com Open. It's drivable off the tee, but the green is tucked behind a hazard. Eagles seem to abound at the tournament over the weekend, highlighted by Rocco Mediate's hole-out en route to his victory in 2010.
In addition to hosting the Frys.com Open, which will serve as the PGA Tour season opener in 2013-14, CordeValle will also host the 2016 U.S. Women's Open.
