Donald Trump's wonderful world of public golf

Donald Trump has beefed up his luxury golf course portfolio in a big way the last few years. And almost all of his recent developments and acquisitions have had one thing in common: public access.

While Trump made a name for himself in golf with private clubs, mostly along the eastern seaboard from West Palm Beach to New York, the public can choose from ten courses and growing throughout North America and Europe.

In 2015, the WGC Cadillac Championship is staged at Trump National Doral Resort in Miami. Meanwhile, just south in the Caribbean, Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico hosts the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.

When New York's Trump Ferry Point Park opens this spring, there will be eleven 18-hole courses in the global Trump brand open to the public. Here's a snapshot of Trump's (public) golf empire:

After purchasing the Miami area's venerable Doral Resort in 2013, the famed Blue Monster was immediately shut down after the 2013 Cadillac Championship for an extensive redesign at the hands of architect Gil Hanse. The result was a bigger, bolder -- yet in some ways more playable course that greeted players in 2014. (Green fees: $225-395)

Gil Hanse officially reopened the Red Tiger the week of the 2015 WGC Cadillac Championship and is meant to be a far more playable and resort-style course to the Blue Monster. Hanse also updated Golden Palm, which features a links-style feel with a smattering of palm trees. (Green fees: $135-225)

The Silver Fox is the former Jim McLean Signature Course, named for the resident teaching guru. It was updated from the original Silver Course by McLean in 2009 but enhanced once again when Trump took over. The course is located off-property just west of the main resort. (Green fees: $105-175)

What was originally Trump's only public layout, Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles overlooks the Pacific Ocean and comes equipped with a smattering of waterfalls and other lavish finishes. Located just north of Aberdeen, Donald Trump brought his brand to Scotland, the birthplace of his mother and where he has a great affinity for the game. His style didn't always mesh with some local opposition of the course, but after numerous delays, the course was finally built. The design by Martin Hawtree has received high praise and the land's towering dunes are no doubt spectacular. (Green fees: £165-215)

The ink was barely dry on the Doonbeg purchase before Trump scooped up the fabled Turnberry Resort in the spring of 2014 from Dubai-based Leisure Corp. Having said one day he plans to host an Open Championship on one of his courses, owning Turnberry -- along with his course in Aberdeen, gives him a pretty good shot. The links reopened on June 1, 2016, after an eight-month renovation by Martin Ebert tweaked most holes and built a few new ones as well. The eight-hole stretch from no. 4 to no. 11 along the rocky cliffs now rivals the best run of seaside golf anywhere in the world. (Ailsa Green fees: £180-195; Kintyre: £70-90)

In early 2014, Trump purchased the lodge and 18-hole links course at Doonbeg in County Clare, about a half hour's drive from 19th century marvel Lahinch Golf Club. The course had suffered a rough winter of coastal damage and Martin Hawtree is overseeing a renovation project. (Green fees: €150-180).

New York City's long awaited Ferry Point Park golf course in the Bronx, conceived over a decade ago and has a price tag of a reported $236 million, is one of the highest profile course opening in 2015.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus and constructed by architect John Sanford, Trump came to the party relatively late in 2013 to bring the course, in its growing stage, to the finish line. Trump will assume operations of the course that will be open to both NYC residents and the general public. It's already been named the host of the 2017 Barclays for the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour.

Trump recently announced tee times for the course, which will open in April, can be made starting on March 11th. (Green fees: $141-169 resident; $190-215 non-resident)

Located just east of San Juan, 36-hole Trump International Golf Club is a licensee of the Trump brand and is adjacent to the Gran Melia Resort on Coco Beach. The courses originally opened in 2005 and were designed by Tom Kite and previously the Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. (Green fee: $175-235)

(Editor's Note: Owners of Trump international Golf Club Puerto Rico filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and their licensee deal with Trump ended. The courses remain operational under the name Coco Beach Golf Club and continue to host the PGA TOUR's Puerto Rico Open.)
