SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Black Horse Course at Bayonet & Black Horse is a great sleeper pick for your Monterey Peninsula golf vacation.

Black Horse makes up half of this 36-hole facility towering high above the ocean. Located on the site of former Fort Ord, the course dates back to 1964 when it was named after the 11th Calvary Regiment, nicknamed "Black Horse," that was stationed at The Presidio of Monterey.

The result after a redesign and renovation by architect Gene Bates is two immaculately conditioned, superbly designed golf courses. Not only are they among locals' favorites (who can't play Pebble Beach every day), but it's a top area venue for tournaments, including U.S. Open qualifiers.

The rolling, parkland setting certainly feels like it could host just about any event thrown its way. With fast, tough greens, lots of sand and tremendous hole variety, lower handicappers in particular are going to enjoy their round here.

Considering rates here are often less than $100, it's a no-brainer for golfers looking for a great round of golf in the Monterey Peninsula without breaking the bank.
