DORADO, Puerto Rico -- Bay Hill has Arnold Palmer. The Dorado Beach Resort & Club has Chi Chi Rodriguez.

Golfers playing any of the four courses at Dorado will likely run into Puerto Rico's most famous player. Rodriguez has a long history with the resort, working at the famed Dorado East Course during its heyday in the 1960s. He beat Doug Saunders in a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf event in 1964.

Although the West Course is currently closed, Dorado East looks and plays better than ever thanks to a renovation by Robert Trent Jones Jr., finished in 2011. The work added length to the 7,192-yard course, repositioned bunkers, restored his father's signature runway tees and converted the greens to ultra-dwarf Champion Bermuda.

Continued clearing of undergrowth and brush has opened up ocean views from 15 holes and made the entire layout more playable.

The first hole runs right along the beach. The better holes on the back nine climb into the jungle and feature rolling fairways. With the opening of Dorado Beach -- a Ritz-Carlton Reserve -- in 2013, this destination west of San Juan is back on the map.
