Golf courses designed by architect Gil Hanse you can play

Rio Olympic Golf Course architect Gil Hanse has had a relatively short career in golf design when compared to modern contemporaries like Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye and his former employer Tom Doak.

Since starting his own design firm in 1995, his portfolio has evolved from renovating older golf courses and building more affordable courses. It's only until recently that he's been assigned to build some of the game's highest-profile modern venues, like Aberdeen Asset Management host Castle Stuart, the redesign of the Blue Monster at Trump National Doral Miami, host of the World Golf Championship, and an update to FedEx Cup Playoffs venue TPC Boston. He also worked on many of the country's most prestigious private clubs, like The Country Club at Brookline and the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club, which is scheduled to host the 2023 U.S. Open.

The debut of the Rio Olympic Course sets the stage for the first of several high-profile openings to come. In late 2016, Mossy Oak will open in northern Mississippi near sister course, Old Waverly. Then, in 2017, Hanse will unveil Streamsong Black, the third championship course to come to acclaimed Streamsong Resort in southwest Florida. He also received a follow-up gig from Donald Trump and is building Trump International Golf Club Dubai, also set to open in 2017.

High-profile jobs aside, there are some accessible and affordable Hanse designs as well, including Rustic Canyon in southern California. One of his course updates was the nine-hole Sewanee Golf & Tennis Club in Tennessee, which raters on Golf Advisor adore for its scenery, playability and affordability.
