Good luck trying to tame The Bull at Pinehurst Farms near Kohler, Wisconsin

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. -- Jack Nicklaus took a page out of Pete Dye's playbook when he designed The Bull at Pinehurst Farms.

Dye's four courses at The American Club in nearby Kohler -- two at Blackwolf Run and two at Whistling Straits -- set the standard for daunting championship golf in the Midwest, although The Bull isn't far behind.

The 7,364-yard course is bullish on giving away good scores, even from the 6,000-yard white tees, where there's a slope of 135.

The routing starts gently in a subdivision before quickly diving into the woods on the fourth hole. The fifth hole, the no. 1 handicap with a second shot over a wetland, is where the madness begins. It's an all-carry shot on the par-3 sixth hole. There's no margin for error around the wetland on the short seventh hole, either. And on it goes throughout the round -- more ponds at the par-4 10th hole and the par-3 15th hole. Hazards galore haunt the terrorizing finishing hole, a par-4 that climbs to a perch below the clubhouse.

The lost balls are worth checking off a bucket-list track. Golf Digest ranks The Bull at Pinehurst Farms no. 77 on its list of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses" for 2013-14.
