Greystone Golf Club in Walworth, New York: Among the Rochester region's best public courses

WALWORTH, N.Y. -- The 7,215-yard Greystone Golf Club, designed by Craig Schreiner, reigns as one of the Rochester region's best public courses. It opened in 1996, the newest and best of the three area courses operated by Dolomite Products.

It's easy to see where the Greystone got its name. The grey stones framing the water's edge at the golf course's most dramatic holes -- the par-3 sixth and par-4 18th -- stare back at players in defiance, daring them to hit a good shot or enjoy the swim.

The rolling, forested land is ideal for golf, soaked with ponds and wetlands. Without any homes in sight, peace and solitude are your only playing partners.

Schreiner shaped massive greens with multiple tiers and wild swinging breaks. Missing the green in the right spot is almost always better than hitting the green in the wrong one.

The elevated fifth tee overlooks a valley home to four strong holes, including the water-logged sixth, the nasty uphill par-4 seventh and the forgivingly downhill par-4 eighth. The par-5 ninth and short par-4 18th holes share the same double green, which clings to the edge of a pond.

Stoney's Pub back in the Greystone clubhouse overlooks this scenic setting.
