Pacific Dunes at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon: Tom Doak's dream is among America's best

BANDON, Ore. -- The Pacific Dunes course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has been called the best golf course in America.

While that fact may be debatable, there's little debate that the links land on which Pacific Dunes was built is among the best in the United States. And there's no debate that Tom Doak created a links masterpiece when Pacific Dunes opened in 2001.

Doak said the 6,663-yard, par-71 Pacific Dunes course "is short enough to give you hope, but rugged enough to test every facet of your game."

Pacific Dunes is one of four distinctly different golf courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, and a fifth course (Bandon Preserve) opens in May 2012.

Born and raised in the former Soviet Union, photographer Oleg Volovik moved to the United States in 1992 and now lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles. He joined the TravelGolf editorial team in 2010. Originally graduated with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering he continued to dedicate his time and energy to his passion for visual arts and photography. Oleg has extensive experience in fine arts, fashion, event, architecture and journalistic photography. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Moscow, where he also taught a master class, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, in April 2007. He may be a novice golfer, but Oleg always wears a white leather glove during photo sessions. "Golf photography is my own 'game' with the beauty of nature and human creativity.

Still, the Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design more than holds its own with its sister courses.
