BREWSTER, Mass. -- True to its name, the Port Course at The Captains Golf Course starts just to the left of the starter shack.

Ten of its holes were built when original architect Brian Silva returned in 1999 to transform his original routing built in 1985 into two courses. The two municipal golf courses owned by the town of Brewster in lower Cape Cod feel almost like mirror images. Both are memorable for their tree-lined fairways and soft elevation changes. Only a few holes have homes or a road in sight.

The 6,724-yard Port Course might be slightly tougher than the Starboard Course, although both have given up the same course record, a 63. The best hole on the property is no. 8 on the Port, a demanding par 5 with an elevated green protected by a pond.

The Captains Golf Course was named the best new course in the country by Golf Digest when it opened. Nearly three decades later, it's still one of the favorites on the Cape, except now it's times two.

"People don't have a preference of one over the other," Director of Operations Mark O'Brien said. "If our members play one, then they want to do the other one the next time. It is helpful that one isn't in demand over the other. They are similar.
