The Grand Golf Club in San Diego is worthy of the Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort

SAN DIEGO -- Designed by Tom Fazio, The Grand Golf Club takes up 350 acres of the 400-acre Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort in northern San Diego, just off the Pacific near other top resorts such as Torrey Pines and La Costa.

The golf course measures 7,160 yards from the longest of six sets of tees. The course, which is rarely crowded, features holes that seem independent of each other. Fazio used his signature bunkering to frame holes and protect greens, many of which have quite a bit of undulation, making three-putts possible throughout the course.

The Grand Golf Club's par 3s are particularly strong, offering a great variety and one of the toughest holes on the course in the par-3 17th, which can play as long as 242 yards over water.

The course ends with a par 4 that plays around and over a stream to a green graced by waterfalls.

When you combine weather with the quality of courses, dining, nightlife and scenery, the San Diego area is one of the best golf destinations in the United States. If money's no object, there are some obvious choices, but if you're on a budget, there are some pretty good selections as well. Mike Bailey offers up some recommendations based on cost.
Torrey Pines South, which hosted the 2008 U.S. Open and will host it again in 2021, and Torrey Pines North are open to the public. Both are wonderful plays, and most days picture-perfect weather will only add to the fun.
