GOTHENBURG, Neb. -- One of the golf world's best values can be found on I-80 in the middle of Nebraska.
Wild Horse Golf Club is a links-inspired play on the outer edges of the Nebraska Sand Hills region. It features wide fairways and rugged bunker shaping. The wind can blow in this exposed part of the plains, which makes it feel all the more like a links-style course. There are four sets of tees, with the championship set playing more than 6,900 yards.
Set on 300 acres, the course was designed by Dave Axeland and Dan Proctor, the two men who shaped Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen (designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw), Nebraska's most well known golf course. Wild Horse, however, is more accessible, just a few minutes off I-80 in Gothenburg in a town of about 3,500 residents.
The secret has certainly gotten out. Last year, officials say 41 states and 11 countries came to Gothenburg to play Wild Horse G.C.
