The state of Texas has an illustrious history in the game of golf, home to legends Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Ben Crenshaw and many more. The vastness of this historic western frontier also lends itself to a wide variety of styles of golf, from more traditional east Texas courses to arid, rolling Hill Country plays to the west. The majority of golf travelers will point their compass to San Antonio and Austin in central Texas, two Hill Country metro areas that serve as the most popular tourist destinations. San Antonio, home of the Alamo and many other amusement parks, features numerous golf resorts, highlighted by the two most recent Valero Texas Open hosts, La Cantera and the TPC San Antonio and JW Marriott Hill Country Resort. The state capital city of Austin is home to Omni Barton Creek Resort, as well as Hyatt Regency Lost Pines.

If you're in Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston, there are fewer true golf resorts and the golf scene is geared more towards corporate groups and local plays. Many of the cities within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has extensively renovated and upgraded their municipal courses in recent years. Houston, meanwhile, has a nice collection of courses ranging from resort courses like La Torretta and Moody Gardens to a wide variety of daily-fee courses. Don't forget way, way out west, the Big Bend National Park town of Lajitas, home to spectacular Black Jack's Crossing on the Rio Grande. As good as the golf is, you'll love Texas hospitality (and barbecue) even more.
