Dogwood Trace Golf Course
Played On 06/07/2018Great Value
Nice course in great shape for a public course. The pace of play was terrible with several very slow groups in front of us on the back 9 and no marshal to push them along.

Without question one of the best courses in Richmond or surrounding area. You can pay more but won’t find a stronger layout. Rees Jones at his best.
Not the best year for growing grass, but it will be perfect by June.
The Royal Virginian Golf Course
Played On 12/05/2017Great Opportunity
This course would be a premium if it was closer to Richmond. The course is challenging, fair, and in great condition.
Next to Viniterra, my favorite course in the Richmond area, this is next. It is an incredible value for the quality of course. Rarely are there more than 10 groups, so we often don't have anyone in front or behind us when we play. Spring and fall are the times for a walk, but it is about 5 miles, so be prepared. Summer is time to hop in a cart for this one.
For a course that has very little play, it is a treat...take advantage of it when you can.

Played On 07/31/2017Viniterra, Don't Hesitate!
The more time between visits to Viniterra, the more I miss it. Living on the west end of Richmond, the drive is about 45 minutes, so it's not as frequent as I would like.
The layout is outstanding. This is a course that makes you think, and looking back at the hole from the green makes you appreciate how the hole plays.
Don't even think about biting off more than you can fairly handle. I play it from the senior tees, and that is perfect for my handicap of 15 and drives that average about 200-225 yards. The biggest difference is in the most challenging par threes. There are many different perspectives and distances from the various tees.
Condition is always optimum for the seasons. The superintendent does a great job with the course.
Clearly, I would become a member if it was closer...but that doesn't keep me from making it my "home" course!
Enjoy!

Play Viniterra every chance you get. It is the best layout within 100 miles of Richmond. Not to be walked, Viniterra will take you through natural woodlands that are nothing short of spectacular.
The course condition is excellent, and pace of play is usually satisfactory.
It is in the league with Spring Creek, and every hole is memorable and different. It is certainly challenging, and some say difficult. I say the natural beauty carved into the landscape more than offsets the relative difficulty.
There are multiple tee boxes on each hole that will give your game a test, regardless of handicap.
One hole, the 13th, is a bit tricky, but I seem to have learned to respect it and usually make a par on this challenging Par 5.
It has all of the things you want in a great golf course, especially one without a clubhouse. I understand that there are plans to build a clubhouse, though.
