Making the rounds at HSB - Apple Rock

this was the first HSB course we played on a recent visit. got a great stay and play deal through Deal Caddy.

i'm glad we played Apple Rock first because it was my least favorite of the three courses. The layout is actually pretty interesting, but the conditions were a mixed bag. Unfortunately the greens had been recently punched, but it also seemed like some of the fairways and tee boxes were not in top shape. It certainly wasn't bad by any means.

You do get a few lake views, which is cool. Overall, it is a nice experience, but doesn't feel like a premium course. If you only had one or two rounds to play at HSB, I'd recommend Ram Rock or Slick Rock.

My first Scottish golf experience...

Recently had a chance to squeeze in some golf on a trip to Scotland. I found this course by just googling around and of course... Golf Advisor!

It was conveniently located along our path back into Edinburgh, so that was a big factor in choosing it. Plus their website mentions they have used the course for Open qualifying and that it is the fourth oldest golfing society (not course) in the world.

I think the most important thing to note before going further is that this course is not a seaside links course! It is an older, parkland style course.

The staff at the course was incredibly welcoming, and they were very helpful getting a rental set. The practice area was very simple, but served its purpose.

The course itself was quite enjoyable. It is short, but many of the holes have good bunkering and several have elevation changes. The conditions were very nice through the green, but the greens themselves were a little shaggy and slow the day I visited.

The environment is very peaceful. Playing as a single I was worried the threesomes in front of me would slow down play, but pace of play was great. I could barely keep up! I loved to see fast moving groups. My favorite thing is that everyone walked! It made for a very relaxed and enjoyable round.

I'd like to rate the course higher, but there weren't a lot of memorable holes. The experience overall was still great though, so if you're looking for a reasonably priced option this is a good choice.

decent track and close to the airport

i picked wolf creek because it had decent reviews and was only 20 minutes from the airport.

the conditions were pretty nice. grass was healthy both in the fairway and on the greens. small greens seem to be the biggest defense here. most of the driving areas are fairly forgiving, although there are a handful of forced carries. but approach shots require precision to stick the small greens.

number 14 is the real gem. a short downhill par 3, which sounds harmless, but the green is super tiny and is backed by water. it's probably the coolest looking hole on the course and a real challenge!

this certainly isn't the best course in the world, but the layout is fun and forgiving for all skill levels. its proximity to the airport makes it a great choice if you're in a hurry (i played 18 holes in a little over 2 hrs), but if you've got time to venture out of town i think there are some more exciting options.

i definitely must note that the staff in the shop was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which is always a huge plus!

a nice little place in the middle of nowhere

a lot of the time on the way out to farmlinks, it wasn't clear where or why a golf course would suddenly appear. but it did, and it's fantastic!

my favorite thing about this course is that anybody can play it. it's wide open and most holes don't have significant forced carries. at the same time, it's still challenging for better players and requires more thought than just hitting it hard and going to find it.

there are dramatic downhill par 3s, drivable par 4s, and some longer par 4s and 5s. a little bit of everything to keep you interested.

it's a gorgeous setting and they clearly take pride in keeping the course in great shape. it's a little secluded, but well worth the journey. a truly fine course!

the best of RTJ!

this course isn't as well known as say "the judge", but so far of the 5 trail courses i've played Ross Bridge is head and shoulders above the group.

the conditions were immaculate from tee to green. the greens were quick, but true.

it's a tough test, but opportunities are there if you play smart. the course is a great example of using bunkers and water hazards to intimidate and deceive. you have to focus on each shot.

be careful which tees you choose here. from the back tees, this is one of the longest courses in the country. we played the orange tees, and it was very reasonable for our group that probably avg 250 off the tee.

there are a lot of great holes here, but 18 is a challenging and gorgeous closing hole. from start to finish, this course is fantastic. 5 stars and i'd give it 10. don't make an RTJ trip without stopping here!

a links experience on RTJ trail

i think 4 stars is a little high, but 3 is a little low. this was the 2nd RTJ course out of 4 we played on a recent trip. it ended up being my third favorite, but it's still a very good course.

it was in great shape from tee to green. there is a great variety of holes, and lots of strategy comes into play. you MUST drive the ball well. there are grassy dunes lining nearly every hole, and any ball that finds them is as good as gone. there are also several fairway bunkers to navigate as you make your way around.

the biggest downside of this course is probably its linksy nature. there are no trees on the course, and the dune-lined holes start to look a little similar after a while. it's not a deal breaker, but i've played links style courses with more interesting terrain (chambers bay, tetherow).

the course is great, but i do feel i should point out that the pace of play police are out in full force. to an annoying degree. we teed off at 8:20am, there were 2 groups behind us and then a tournament. there was a twosome in front of us. obviously we couldn't keep up with a twosome, and the foursome behind us was a little off our pace. still we were warned several times to speed up. in fact after being thanked by one marshal on 10 tee for getting back on pace, another marshal got on us coming off 10 green for being too slow, even though the group behind us wasn't even on the tee.

final note: #17 was the hardest hole of the whole trip. wow. good luck!

a great top on your RTJ trail adventure

the lake course at grand national is a fun course! it was the first stop on a recent trip to 5 alabama courses (4 rtj, 1 not). the only previous RTJ course i'd played was magnolia grove, and this course was a step above.

there is great variety on the holes. the large number of fairway bunkers create very strategic tee shots. it's definitely not a bang and driver and go find it kind of course... which i really appreciate.

there are a few blind tee shots and it's really helpful to have some course knowledge... for example, on 6 the water is very reachable and you have to stay short of the bunker.

overall, it's a fantastic course situated around a lake. the last half of the back 9 is all along the lake and it's quite scenic. the price was super reasonable and the staff was very friendly. this is definitely a worthy stop on your trail journey, but it was probably my least favorite course of the 4 we played this time (and that's saying a lot).

fun layout, good value

i hadn't played out here for several years. it's never been the best maintained course. they have put some work into greens and bunkers and that's really helped.

truthfully, the course is still not in amazing shape. everything through the green is patchy and you'll probably want to play the ball up to avoid getting frustrated. the greens were very slow, but were nice! same for the bunkers. it's obvious they are putting in effort.

despite the conditions, the layout is fun and interesting. it's a short course, but not all of the holes can be overpowered. there are strategic trees and holes that require you to shape the ball or be badly out of position.

overall, it's a classic old style course. the staff were super friendly too. if you like that kind of thing, it's worth the time. get out there and have some fun!

Midwestern Beauty

Played Pevely Farms on a Tuesday afternoon, which was great because it was wide open. The property is quite beautiful with rolling hills and many trees. Particularly with the fall colors it was very lovely. The staff was also very welcoming and friendly.

The course is a pretty fun layout. Good elevation changes, many holes have severe changes of direction as well. Definitely keeps things interesting. The course didn't seem to be in tiptop shape though. The tee boxes and greens were pretty shaggy. It's possible there had been rain in the area recently, but I'm not sure. It wasn't a major issue, but did distract a bit from the experience. Also as noted is some other reviews, there were multiple times where a seemingly well played shot would just disappear. The rough is fairly thick, so anything not in the fairway is at risk of not being found. Seemed a bit much for shots just a few feet off the fairway.

One odd thing was that the third hole was listed as a par 4 on the card and on the course website, but in person it was marked as a par 3. Not a huge deal, but worth noting.

Overall, I think the course is very enjoyable. In the spring or summer I can imagine it being even more beautiful if it was fully green as in some of the pictures posted here. I would certainly go back.

Just do it!

I've been looking forward to playing this course for years. I visit Chicago frequently, but usually in February... not exactly golf season. Finally I was there and the weather was great so I went out to try Dubsdread.

Fantastic.

It's a super tough course, with heavy rough, ample bunkers, elevated greens, and LONG. This day in particular the wind was strong (and seemingly always into me) and the course was damp and not rolling out at all. Lots of long iron approach shots.

Older, parkland style courses are my favorite. I like that you get trees, but also enough space to not constantly lose balls. I wouldn't say it's an easy walk, but the holes generally run near each other so walking is definitely an option.

18 is about as tough a closing hole as I can think of. Over 430 and was straight into the wind. I needed 3wood on my 2nd, but the landing area gets very narrow. Didn't end well for me, but what a course.

I would absolutely recommend this course. It's probably in my top 5 of all time. Just a beautiful course and a real challenge that isn't gimmicky or unfair. What are you waiting for?

All about the finishing hole!

It was a tough call between the Ocean Course and the Old Course. I really like links style golf, but all the reviews talked about how great the view on 18 at the Old Course was so I had to see what it was all about. And now here's another one... cause wow!

The whole course is a nice layout. The holes have character and you won't get bored. Some of the holes are a little tight to the house line, which can be troubling if you're off your game. All the same, the entire back 9 is a gem. The finishing 3 holes are particularly fun and beautiful.

18 tee is super cool. The approach shot is daunting and beautiful. To make it even more interesting you get a gallery of folks at the restaurant right by the green. No pressure!

Nothing but good things to say about the course. You should check it out! My only word of caution is about the parking situation. I was lucky enough to get the last spot in the tiny lot by the course. There is a parking garage nearby, but it's also available for parking to access the beach so it was already full when I arrived. Last resort would have been to valet. That was a minor issue though, and the rest of the experience was great.

a nicklaus gem (is there any other kind?)

our golf group recently hit 5 courses in the Bend area for a trip/tournament. we chose Pronghorn as our final round destination. having noticed over the years that i am a big fan of nicklaus designs i was very excited for this course.

i wouldn't say it disappointed, but bend offers plenty of stiff competition, and this ended up being my second favorite course of the trip to Tetherow.

however, this course is magic! the conditions were immaculate. the pro shop, the caddies, and the starters were all super friendly and welcoming.

it's a pretty long course, so expect to hit a lot of drivers. i prefer a little more variety, but didn't have much choice. definitely a good idea to keep the ball in play too... it gets pretty punishing when you go offline.

the whole property is quite beautiful, and the holes fit the landscape nicely. i wouldn't say there is a huge variation between holes, but it all flows nicely.

unfortunately i chose this round to play my worst of the trip, so i have some inherent negativity about the course, but just based on the layout and the condition this course is a must play. the price is steep, but it definitely has an exclusive vibe. just check out the google maps view of the course... there is nothing around for miles! very cool!

there are not enough stars...

I would definitely give this course more than five stars if I could. It is one of my all time favorites. The whole facility seems to have an attitude and a vibe that is a little more modern and cool. It was certainly a welcome change from the usual formula for a top notch golf facility.

So let's get to the big question... Golf boards: great thing or greatest thing? I had never golf boarded before, but the videos looked really fun. I'm not a surfer, snowboarder, skater, or anything like that so I didn't know if I'd actually be able to pull it off. It's a little bit of baptism by fire on the way to the first tee, but I left wishing I could play every round with a golf board. It's super fun to cruise the fairways, and I think it does help distract your mind from getting too hung up on poor shots because you are way more focused on not dying!

There is actually a golf course here too, and it is fantastic! I am a big fan of the more natural, fast rolling courses. This course will test you. It's tight and there is trouble all around. Having a forecaddy is definitely very helpful! Precision is required with every swing, but good shots are rewarded (most of the time). This is a style of golf I really enjoy (also a big fan of Chamber's Bay), but it's not for everyone.

The views are breathtaking and the golf is great. It's a hard combination to beat! You should check it out.

a tough test worthy of the Top 100

i'll start out keeping this simple: PLAY THIS COURSE!

It is worth the money, and it's awesome. It is very tough though! You're gonna want to bring either A) your best game off the tee or B) lots of extra balls. There are forced carries on several holes, tight driving lines, and rough/fescue that will bring you to tears.

The layout is fantastic though! Lots of variety and opportunities to hit all kinds of different shots both off the tee and on approach.

The 5th hole is one of the toughest I can remember playing anywhere, especially given the stiff headwind we were facing. The marshall even wished us luck as we were teeing off.

You are going to work hard during this round, but it's worth it. The views are amazing and the conditions are pristine. Just try to remember to have fun and soak in the scenery while you're searching for another ball in the rough!

solid track. fun and challenging.

played this course as the morning round of a 36 hole day. the biggest thing that hurt my impression of this course was the anticipation of playing crosswater in the afternoon. i know that's not really fair, but it was unavoidable.

however, this course is still a great course! taken on its own it has everything you'd want. cool holes and a variety of challenges. water hazards are used wisely to present challenges and not just there for decoration. and one of my favorite features of any course is forcing some variety off the tee. you definitely don't just have to hit driver off every tee here, and the par 3s also have some good variation to keep them interesting.

conditions were very good, but not pristine (crosswater was in noticeably better condition). certainly better than any course i see at home in the Texas summer!

overall, this course is a great choice, especially if you don't want to spend the extra money on crosswater.

mountain side bargain!

this was the first course our group played on our trip to the Bend area. it was conveniently located just minutes from the redmond airport allowing us to play the day we arrived. my flight was delayed, so i went from sitting on an airplane to teeing off in less than 30 min!

this course did not disappoint. my expectations were lower since this course doesn't have the national awareness of course like Pronghorn or Tetherow, but wow! our whole group really enjoyed the layout. it was in great shape, and the course is beautiful.

it isn't the most challenging course, but it's not push over either. and it certainly is not just a bland 18 holes you've seen before.

i would definitely recommend this course for any trip to the Bend area!

old style course in the heart of NOLA

buddy of mine is a member here... not sure if that's required to play.

the course is a classic old course in my mind. holes tightly bunched, which would make for an easy walk. not a lot of elevation changes, but the holes take some fairly interesting turns. good use of water and bunkering to bring in some challenges.

overall, the course is a fun play, but the conditions were not the greatest. it's a pretty tight course, so if your driver is off the mark it could be tough.

certainly not the greatest course, but i like old style courses and had a great time playing this one.

my first taste of the trail

this was my first time playing a course on the RTJ trail. really enjoyed this course. fantastic layout, with stunning views and very well maintained tee to green. unfortunately the day we played the greens seemed to be overseeded or something and were running incredibly slow. that was somewhat frustrating, but didn't change my opinion that the course is great!

tough test, but great scenery

this is a tough course! especially if the wind is out of the north.

layout is very challenging, but still fun. definitely recommend being conservative on your tee selection.

interestingly, most of the par 4s are pretty short, but the par 3s and 5s are mostly very long. don't plan on making easy birdies! all the green complexes are well protected and tricky, especially when the greens are running quick.

if you get a chance, it's a great hill country golf experience.
