A lot of Potential

I am from the East coast and was trying to find a course in the LA/Burbank area while visiting here. I went to this course based on the reviews and proximity to where I was staying. The layout of the course was pretty good for a public course but the course conditions were not very good except for the greens. The greens were in good shape, but the rest of the course was not in good shape. There was construction on several holes with machinery on the course. There were a few holes that had big patches of dirt in the middle of the fairways. The course has a lot of potential to be a very good course but needs better maintenance.

Disappointed with condition

I played both this course and legends course and found the champions course was in poor shape in comparison. I also was a bit annoyed that workers were doing work on many holes and didn’t stop working as we were approaching the greens. This is a distraction and should not be done in midday. Course layout was good but greens had been aerated recently and were bumpy. Lots of dirt spots on the course and a few areas near greens looked like there were recently repaired and not flat. Sand very hard like a rock in bunkers and made it difficult to get out of. Staff was very accommodating and beverage cart and halfway house on the course was a plus. Course could be spectacular if it was in better shape. I would not play it again unless I was sure course conditions were improved.

Nice challenging course

I played here for the first time and enjoyed the course. Course was in very good shape and greens were very fast. There were some holes that require a lengthy carry for some and I would not recommend course for higher handicap golfers, but I had no issues. Overall found course was fair but challenging. It was nice that there were beverage carts on course as well as halfway house and bathrooms. Practice facility was adequate . Would play on this course again.

Good club but could be better

After not playing here for many years, I returned to this course and played here 5 or 6 times this year. In the spring the course was in very good shape and the round moved very quickly. Played in less than 4 hours. As the season went on, the pace of play slowed but still not terrible and pace of play was pretty good for most of the year. Grill/bar was average and what you would expect to pay at a golf course.
The main problem I had with this course was in the fall. The course has many trees and thus in the fall many leaves. The problem was that on many holes the leaves were massive. Even on balls that were hit just off the fairway in the first cut, the leaves covered balls and made it difficult to find. Course maintenance was definitely an issue this fall and that was my memory of the course in years past.
I will definitely play this course again but will wait till spring and stop playing there by early fall.

Beautiful course and great views

I was invited to play here with a friend who is a member at this club. This is not open to the public but if you a chance to play it, jump at it. Beautifully maintained and very challenging to the average golfer and even to lower handicaps. Lots of up and down lies but also a very fair course. Greens are fast but not PGA pro fast and usually pin placement is fair. Great views from the 17th hole and a few others. Bunkers are also fair and well maintained.
The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the 19th hole has a great patio overlooking the Nissequogue River where you can have a cocktail after the round.

Wet and rainy but still had a great day

This is one of my favorite courses on Long Island and it was in very good shape. The course has some very challenging holes especially holes 6, 8 and 9 on the front and holes 12 , 13, 14 and 15 are no walk in the park either. The course is fair and challenging. It will reward you with good shots and punish you with bad shots.greens were a little slower than I expected but that may have been because of the rain. Finished the round in just under 4 hours.

Nice round good pace of play

I have played this course many times before but this was the first time I walked it. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no motorized carts and no amenities open. Course was in very good shape but a few holes had a lot of leaves on it and two or three holes had some repairs going on with workers on the course. Overall a pretty nice course and I enjoy playing it but not a course I like to walk ordinarily. Pace of play was very good and only had to wait on holes about 3 times. The course has a few holes with some very steep hills, but overall mostly flat. Some challenging holes and greens were in very good shape.

Pretty good course for a public course

I have played here many times and the course is in fairly good shape except for the few holes that have drainage work going on. Greens are in pretty good shape except for hole number 6 which has a temporary green. Greens have improved over the last 2 years. Flat course, good to walk and fairways were in pretty good shape. This course is usually packed but due to the COVID-19 the pace of play has been great and the course is not packed. In normal times this course is packed on the weekends and not enjoyable to play during prime time due to slow pace of play. Only thing I don't like about this course is that there usually is no cart girl and halfway house is closed most of the time. Also lacks facilities on the course except for one bathroom by hole number 6 which sometimes is in really bad shape. The course is not an extremely difficult course but there is almost always wind conditions because it is right on the water. Windy conditions present a lot of the time.

Always windy

This is one of my local courses and I play it quite often. I dislike playing the combination of Blue/white and much prefer playing Red/Blue. Part of the problem is that I always find that the white course is very marshy and wet. It is also not maintained as well as the Red and Blue courses for some reason. There are always a lot of wet muddy spots around holes 2 and 4 and it is a confusing layout where it intersects with the Blue course. The Blue course is very challenging and has great views of the Great South Bay. Also pace of play has been slow this season around 5 hour rounds.

Poor service and slow round

Our group was on a golf trip we do every year in the Saratoga area. We decided to try this course based on some reviews we read online. The course layout was ok but the round was extremely slow. Some greens were in very poor shape and seemed to have fungus. We ended up playing the front 9 twice because the 10 th tee box had 3 foursomes on it when we reached it. Up to that point our round was 2 hours and 30 minutes. When we made the turn we were going to get a drink and quick bite but the snack shack was closed for the afternoon because there was a wedding in the restaurant! We could not even buy a soda, snack of any kind or anything. The pro at the golf club just shrugged his shoulders and said nothing he could do. I would not play this course ever again and would not recommend it to anyone.

I am Joe Kehn and Im the superintendent of Mcgregor Links CC. I am so sorry you had a bad experience at our club and I remember the day you were here. It was extremely busy. We had a terrible year with disease and finances were not available for chemicals last year
This season promises to much better and if you can contact me I can get you on the course so that you can enjoy our beautiful historic course built in 1921. You can reach me at jkehn34@gmail.com Thanks

Slow play

I have played this course several times in the last year, but this last time the pace of play was dreadful. Over 5 hours and we were waiting on at least 12 holes. I saw 2 rangers but did not ever see them ask anyone to speed up the pace of play. For a city owned course it is in pretty good shape, but there are few amenties. Fairly straight holes, only 2 water holes. A few nice views of the Throgs Neck Bridge. There is a cart girl with beer on the weekends but that's about it. I play here because it is a midpoint for me and some buddies, but honestly for the price you pay to walk I can ride in most places I play on Long Island.

Slow slow slow

I've played this course several times in the past. It appeared to be a great value online, however the pace of play was very slow. We waited right from the start and it only got worse. The round took 5 hours. It was hard to get into any type of rhythm and it was very frustrating to wait after every hole. There is no half way house but at least there was a cart girl. No place to get a sandwich or a hot dog. Normally I don't care about eating on the course but with all the waiting around I would have had plenty of time to eat. The bottom line is that the price was not worth the wait.

Very sorry to hear about your experience. The Halfway House opened for the season today, which doesn't help you last week.

We try our best to move groups along but unfortunately the day you played we had a few some very poor players ahead of you that simply took too long.

Please email me at bcurtin33@gmail.com when you can.

Thank you for the comments, it's the only way we can get better.

A little disappointed

I had played this course in the past and had not been there in about 2 years. The course condition was fair to average. There was a flooding condition on the 4th and 14 the hole. There were a lot of leaves on the ground and looks like it hadn't been blown off at all. I found out after getting there that there had been a fire there earlier in the week and the golf carts were on loan so I will cut them some slack. I had a wrap from the grill and it was just OK. I will give this place a pass this time because I have played here in the past and it is has been much better.
