Whispering Woods Golf Club
Played On 10/27/2017Kafkaesque
Greens were in real shape. That ends the positive stuff. The fairways were just ok, but no cores on most sprinkler heads (on four occasions hurting for balls lost in fairway and finally found in sprinkler). Tee boxes a disaster. Funky layout with 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s. Lots of target golf holes.
The real problems were with what I assume were residents, walking aimlessly around the course o driving carts (with no clubs on them) randomly around the course.

This course used to be touted as one of the finest in the Pinehurst area. Now it's one of the worst. It was always annoying that it seemed to be designed for slow play. With long distances between greens and the next tee, it isn't practice to walk. And fencies blocking access to many fairways make them "cart path only" even in perfect weather, so you wait while the group in front sheleps across the fairway, hoping they brought the right clubs. And the parking areas are as far as 70yds from green centers, several in front of the green. All adds up to a slow round.
But, the group in front will have a chance to clear the way while you three put on the greens that all have huge areas where they have lost their turf and you can try to put through sand painted green (every green and large areas).
Couple this with an arrogant staff that act like they are doing you a favor by letting you play and it makes for an unpleasant experience.
North Shore Golf Course

Greens in very good shape, especially for a public course. No tricked out holes, a very good track. Although there were a few 5-domes allowed on the course, the pace of play was reasonable.
The back 9 has some beautiful holes, tree lined with lots of spanish moss.
