Hapuna Golf Course
Played On 04/05/2018Fun course, had a great day
Played Hapuna in April 2018. Our day was pretty great, pace of play was fantastic, no one in front of us and no pressure from behind. Course layout is pretty cool, lots of great views. It's set in the foothills above the ocean so not actually on any oceanfront property. Some construction going on for new home plots but it never bothered us. Greens, fairways were pure and rough wasn't punishing so you could play from everywhere. Only criticism is for a resort course they should give a little more room off the tee, some of the tough par 4's are pretty tight and unforgiving unless you are swinging driver well. I lost more balls than I expected but that's my fault due to making poor swings. Hybrids and irons off tees are options in a lot of places but will make some holes into the wind play really hard. Can't compare to Mauna Kea or Mauna Lani as I didn't play but rate is bargain compared to those other premier ocean courses. No restaurant on site just Bev cart which is decent. Showers available which was great after a long day in the hot sun. Staff was really nice and took good care of us. Overall a great experience. If you want a great challenge, chill experience, and great views for $160 this is a great value and choice.
Makani Golf Club
Played On 04/03/2018Really good course, different option on Big Island
Played Big Island CC in April 2018, had a fun day. Course is designed well, nice soft opening then starts sprinkling in some really tough holes, especially Par 3's, and some short fun par 4's. Dye did a good job challenging player visually off the tee and into greens, good mix of safety and trouble. Not as finely groomed as the major resort courses, some scruffiness but greens were great. Amenities are almost non-existent, all temporary yurts and structures, no clubhouse built yet, bring food/snacks as they might not always have a great selection. They don't allow "guests" to hit off the grass range, only "members", which is kinda lame when you pay $100+ for golf. Finish is tough, some people don't like it, I thought it was a good test to close out your round. I'd play it again if I was in the area and had a free day. Not sure they are achieving a "member" like country club feel of upscale living or experience. Basically the feel of a really good muni course that's way off the main track. Beautiful drive and great views, unique perspective of that part of the island most may not see. I recommend if you have a chance to see it.
Kona Country Club
Played On 03/30/2018Beautiful golf experience on the ocean
Pleasantly surprised by Kona CC, played March 2018. Upon landing we headed straight over and they were very flexible with letting us have lunch first and pushing back our tee time 30 minutes. Hit some slower players on the front 9 but it was Good Friday and lots of golfers out that day. Back 9 opened up just fine. The ocean holes are fantastic, off the charts, better than pictures could make it look. 2nd green, 3rd hole are just amazing spots. More ocean on the back 9, beautiful par 3 and set of 2 par 4's. Layout is challenging and fair, not extreme deep bunkering or trouble all over, good amount of space to drive the ball before finding trouble. Greens were slower than expected, all bermuda and quite grainy but they were very slow for our taste. Only complaint would be they require carts to come in at 6:00pm while there's 30 mins of daylight left so we couldn't play 17 or 18 as we hit the 6:00 mark on 16 green and a marshal asked us to pack it in. 18 looks like an epic finishing hole. But, that's just because we teed off at 230 so if you can get out earlier that solves that problem. Otherwise Staff was great, restaurant has great food and amazing view, practice areas are cool (we came back and practiced during our vacation). Super fun track, chill environment, inspiring ocean front holes, very playable. I hope to play it again when I go back.
Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/12/2018Real test of golf, great facility
Played Horizon Hills Malaysia in March 2018. Course used to host Asia/Euro Tour even to so it's the real deal. Some holes are really tough, a bit much for amateur golf but if you play proper tees you can mitigate some of this by shortening the course. Conditions were pretty pure. Nice variation of holes.
Some bunker/green complexes overdone in terms of playability for amateurs, could be less punishing on some holes. Caddy is nice but not of professional caliber you would get in the US or UK. Clubhouse, locker room, open air restaurant are all first class. Great way to spend the day playing golf. Bring lots of water. Only major fault is they don't supply you with ice cold water when dealing with obscene heat for 4 to 5 hours. Stock up before going out and at the turn. I'd recommend playing if in the area, much cheaper than Singapore courses.
