Pelham Bay at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course
Played On 03/18/2022Don’t bother
Played here last Friday afternoon. The pace of play was abysmal! 5 1/2 hour around. Not a ranger in sight. Waited five to 10 minutes on every shot.
The course itself was in reasonable condition except for the fact that at least half of the tea boxes were closed.
I get that this is a New York City public course and it was one of the first nice days of the season. However, the people I played with who play here regularly said that around of this length at this course is pretty standard, especially on nice days.
It is an excusable For them to not have good active course management. Made a nice day very frustrating. I will not be back.
Spooky Brook Golf Course
Played On 10/01/2021AERATED GREENS
I play this course pretty frequently and usually it's quite nice. However, this time around I bought my round through Golfnow.
Neither the cashier in the pro shop nor the starter let me know that all the greens were recently aerated. There were no signs posted anywhere of this being the case.
The quality of the aeration basically made the greens unplayable!
I played nine holes and left in frustration. When I went into the manager his response was "this was posted on our website". As paying customers we are supposed to go to a golf course's website to find out whether or not it was aerated?!
It is ridiculous that they do not give you forewarning prior to taking your money.
Caveat emptor!
Warrenbrook Golf Course
Played On 06/24/2021Nice course
This was my first time playing Warrenbrook. I have played on the other Somerset County courses.
This is a deceptively challenging course. Although short, the layout is quite tight requiring accurate well placed shots. There are many uneven lies and blind shots either from tee box or to green. On several of the fairways unless your placement is excellent, because of the overall slope of the course you could end up rolling into trouble quite easily.
The course conditions are excellent. My only minor quibble is that the greens were a little slow on the day that I played but were quite true in terms of roll.
Overall, I would highly recommend this course and will definitely be coming back to play again.
Quail Brook Golf Course
Played On 08/26/2020Great county track
One of my favorites in the area. Beautiful layout with parkland openness on the front 9 followed by the more challenging nicely rolling back 9.
Well maintained with fast true greens.
A good day out!
East at Tamarack Golf Course
Played On 10/09/2019Suckered
I played the course today after not having played it for almost a month and a half. Last time I played the fairways were burnt with many bare spots and the greens were in horrible condition. I had thought that given end of season that they would have recovered somewhat.
At the front desk before paying for my round I specifically asked them what kind of condition the course was in. I was told “it’s playing really good“. So… I proceeded to pay my fee and go ahead and play. West course was closed so I played the east. First of all the fairways have not recovered well. Worse yet, every single green was recently aerated and sanded. They were basically unplayable.
I was so angry I went in to complain to the management after my round. They did give me a coupon for a free return round but I don’t think that I’ll be back to this until it recovers fully. That will probably be sometime next year.

I think the best thing about this course is the variation in the different holes. As the course name implies, each hall is designed after a different classic golf architect. What this means to the player is that each hole has a different character. Neshanic Valley Golf Course - Meadow/Lake Course
Played On 09/10/2019Be straight!
A very nice course. Probably the best county course in the area. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are in excellent shape and well maintained. Greens were a little slower today than in the past but true.
Course layout is quite nice with some challenging holes thrown in. The first cut of rough is quite high and second shots will depend on how your ball lies. The fescue is almost impossible to hit out of. You better hit straight on this course or there will be a lot of lost balls!
Overall a good day out and a good test of golf.
Great Gorge Golf Club - Lake/Quarry Course
Played On 08/14/2019Hidden Gem
Didn't know about this course until 2 weeks ago when I saw a $26 round with cart on Golf Now.
Course is the old Playboy Club course set in the hills of Northern NJ.
It is a 27 hole course alternating between the challenging Quary course cut into an old quary with many elevation changes throughout in a picturesque setting. The Rail 9 is set over an old railway track and the Lakes 9 which is probably the most challenging of the 3. All are set in a beautiful valley using the hillside and valley floor to wonderful advantage with many elevation changes and doglegs. This is a shot makers course which rewards ball placement rather than simply just bombing away. It is superbly maintained and has challenging fast greens requiring a deft touch.
This is not a walking course unless you are in fantastic shape and are prepared to be really tired at the end of your round.
Overall this is possibly one of the best values in NJ for golf. I hope this review doesn't lead to hordes coming in to play because its really nice to have discovered one of the true "hidden gems" of NJ golf! Hard to be selfish with my fellow golfers though. Come play this course.
East at Tamarack Golf Course
Played On 08/13/2019Come back in the fall
This is a really nice course when it is in good shape. It is NOT now. An easily walkable course with enough variety to keep things interesting. Greens are slow. I think because this is a county course that gets a lot of traffic they are loathe to cut them too close for fear of loosing them.
Just played there last week and course is in terrible shape! Many of the fairways are burnt down to dust/mud and the greens are more like sand traps than greens with all of the sanding they've had. Both East and West are under new management which has improved the courses tremendously. They are doing great work with improvements and maintenance. Unfortunately, with all of the heavy rain and then hot conditions we've lost a lot of the improvements. This is temporary though. I agree with another reviewer that they should shut down one of the 2 courses, work on restoring it and then alternating to the other. That would at least put one course in decently playable shape. As it is now I won't be going back until the courses recover. I don't think that will be until at least late fall given current conditions.
