Mount Saint Helena Golf Course
Played On 07/24/2015Tree lined course
You have to hi it long and straight to shoot par.
The pace of play is always excellent because there are few golfers out.
Lone Tree Golf Course
Played On 7/22/2013a long course for the average golfer
I enjoyed the challenge. I am a short hitter so I could not reach the greens with irons, as is the case in most other courses. I had an opportunity to get a lot of use from my woods. Players of all abilities should enjoy this layout
Mare Island Golf Club
Played On 7/15/2013A fun course with many steep hills
If you enjoy long shots up steep hills and drives off of canyon bluffs, this is the best course. With the wind and elevation shifts, it is best to play with a partner who can help with club selection. Errant shots will be lost in impenetrable hazards. Everyone should play this unique layout at least each year. It makes every other course quite simple.
Foxtail Golf Club - North Course
Played On 7/12/2013Challenging course that is very well kept
This is the best public course that I have played based on upkeep and challenge. It is surprising that it can be so green in the midst of a drought. We have always enjoyed all the sand traps, water, pace of play, and reasonable layout. Any level of golfer can experience some satisfaction and the better golfers will be delighted with the variety of looks.
Rio Vista Golf Club
Played On 6/26/2013This is a beautiful setting and a difficult course that needs maintenance
I love the layout with 4 shots over water to various greens and another 5 or 6 with adjacent water so hitting balls straight and getting balls airborne are important for this course. There are a smattering of fairway bunkers that further require accuracy off the tee.
The course has too many unrepaired divot marks and other bare spots. There is no sand in the "sand traps". The dirt in them is so coarse and packed that one can walk around and barely leave a foot mark.
Despite these issues, I enjoy the layout and the value. With proper attention, this would be one of the best settings for the moderately successful golfer. (Not for duffers!)
Eagle Vines Golf Club
Played On 6/10/2013This is a challenging course for all golfers
Everyone that I know enjoys this course. It is the best in Napa County. We played late in the day and the pace of play was very fast which we appreciated. Every hole presents a new challenge. The course is easily accessible form the entire East Bay and I always meet golfers from all over. Try it!
Sugarloaf Golf Club
Played On 5/20/2013This is a beautiful setting and a difficult "executive" course
I love to play this course because there are many difficult holes to challenge the "better" golfers. The deer have the right of way and add to the charm. The views of the coastal range is usually sharp and clear. The course is well maintained and the pace of play is usually excellent. I played yesterday in just under 3 hours but 31/2 is more typical. For the novice, the fairways are wide and spraying the ball is not too troublesome. For the better golfers, there are 6 par threes that are 170-210 yards. For the real "bombers" the course is too short since all the par 4s are 230-350 yards, with 310 the most typical.
Northwood Golf Club
Played On 4/10/2013This is among the most picturesque courses in America
The journey through the redwoods is beautiful as long as you hit it straight. This is the most beautiful 9 hole inland course imaginable.
There is sufficient challenge that the expert golf, as well as the average player can have a lot of fun. IMO, it is best for the raw beginners to play elsewhere because of the looming trees everywhere that are unforgiving to the stray shot. Consequentially, weekend play can be too slow. I played on a Wednesday and and my threesome finished in less than 1 3/4 hours. This course is worth the experience.
Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course
Played On 2/13/2013A good value
I like this course because it usually plays fast. It is a simple layout with most holes simply straight ahead until you get to the stretch of holes that take you "up the mountain". The signature hole is a drive off a cliff to the fairway far below. I am an average golfer and this course is manageable for me when I am playing well.
Hiddenbrooke Golf Club
Played On 1/8/2013This is a challenge for above average golfer
This is not a course for duffers. Any errant shot will be lost out of bounds or down in a gully. For the 18 handicapper and better, it is a special challenge which rewards the long straight hitter. The greens are fast so putting speed is difficult for those new to the course. Participation was sparse so pace of play was under 4 hours.
Vintner's Golf Club
Played On 11/15/2012It is a relatively short course with many challeging features
The par three water hole scares most average golfers. The first hole leads to many lost balls if one cannot carry a second shot to the green. Another par three has two large sand trap magnets that require good distance control. It is fun for golfers of all abilities.
