Lakewood National Golf Club - Commander Course
Played On 05/26/2019Great conditions, fun layout.
As all of the other reviews have said, this course is in excellent shape. Fast rolling greens, and lush fairways. There are some areas where the deep rough was at least 5 inches tall, making for some very difficult second shots. For the most part there’s plenty of room off of the tee, and if you hit to the correct portion of the green there are plenty of birdie opportunities. When it’s windy, the course can feel VERY long so pick the correct tees to avoid soul-killing sadness.
Rosedale Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/26/2019Forgot how tight this course is
I haven’t played at this course in at least four years. The tee shots are much tighter than I remember because of turns and small hills.. But it’s a fair test of your ability to shape your tee shots. My buddy and I were greedy and tried to hit a lot of drivers. Your best bet is to hit long irons into off the tee and have more than 150 in. We’ve had a lot of rain around here lately so the course was pretty soggy, but a lot of the holes drain pretty well especially in the fairways. The greens were punched recently so putting was bumpy. Within another week I imagine they’ll be rolling really well. If you have GPS pay attention to where the trouble is.
Sandpiper Golf Club - Lakes/Palms Course
Played On 04/17/2019Good greens, bad bunkers.
Cool little layout. We played the Palms 9, then the Oaks. Palms had much larger greens and more straight forward layout. The oaks course is actually a lot of fun with it’s winding fairways and very small greens. My buddy is from Monterey California and he said a lot of these greens were about the size of those found at Pebble Beach. All of the greens were rolling pretty well, but the areas around the greens and the bunkers all over the course (especially fairway bunkers) were not in good shape. This made chipping and pitching extremely challenging. The little bar/ restaurant on site is fun, and the bartender was really friendly.
The Groves Golf Course
Played On 03/15/2019Fun short course, but the greens need work
I’ve played here several times over the past five or six years. I usually play on the Highlands course, but I wanted to squeeze in an afternoon round so I went to the Groves. It’s a fun layout and you have a lot of options with your iron shots. You can leave the three wood and driver at home. Unfortunately, the greens were in absolutely terrible shape. All 18 pins had patches of thick green sand and dead patches around them. If you want a quick 18 and want to work on shaping some iron shots I recommend this course. But don’t expect to be making any putts.
South Course at Big Cypress Golf & Country Club
Played On 06/03/2018Fun and tricky layout
I live in Sarasota and met a couple of buddies in Lakeland to play here. Great conditions and a really fun course to play. It was a lot tougher than the yardage on the scorecard reflected. There are some tight tee shots from the tips and awkward yardages to keep it in play at times. Moving the ball in both directions off the tee definitely helps here. The greens are pretty large and in great condition, but filled with slopes and hills. Those are really the defense of this course. A lot of fun to play. I'll definitely be back.
Celebration Golf Club

This is a really great course. REALLY fun layout and good conditions. Even with all of the rain over the past few weeks the greens were rolling well. It's a true gem even among the many great courses in the area.
