Mayfair Country Club
Played On 04/12/2024golf courses should have grass
There's barely enough grass to make the area look green. With year round growing season, there is no excuse to have bare fairways on a golf course. The bunkers had poor sand and you could damage a wedge if you didn't watch where you were hitting. The course was overbooked and the starter was overwhelmed, but he worked hard to get the lineup organized. We were only 15 minutes late starting for a round that took over 5 hours. They don't have a ranger to monitor slow players. The practice area was worthless. It's an inexpensive place to play golf and that's the only positive thing to say about the experience. We won't be back because I don't see much plans to improve.
Cypress Knoll Golf & Country Club
Played On 04/09/2024Fun course, good value
First time to play this course and we will be back. It's not on the level of a PGA tournament but it is a good layout and relatively well maintained. The fairways were a little bare along the edges and cart paths (which wind through the woods) are quite rough, but everything considered, the course is good. The sand traps could use more sand or better preparation. In my opinion, the greens are the best condition of many courses I have played in this part of FL. They hold well if your shot has loft/spin and roll true. The course is laid out in a subdivision, partially, so shot placement is critical in most areas. Other holes have woods on both sides so shot placement is critical there also. We played midweek and the course was not crowded so pace of play was excellent. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. It was an overall enjoyable day.
Buffalo Creek Golf Course
Played On 02/20/2024My new favorite course
In my view, this course is the best value for the money I have found in the area. The staff is friendly and helpful and everyone seems to know their job and cater to patrons. The layout is moderately difficult but if the teeshot is placed properly the play is easy. Sand bunkers need attention with additional material but evaluation was difficult because of heavy rainfall previously. There is some bad spots on the greens that are being address but overall the greens were very good and rolled true with appx. 6-8 stemp. A few of the greens have severe breaks that call for quite a bit of skill. The greens were my favorite part of the course. There are some VERY large gators on the grounds so watch where you ball goes. You are a visitor at their home. This is a very enjoyable day of golf.

Played On 02/14/2024good value golf course
Overall impression is positive. Staff was awesome from check in to finish. Greens putted reasonably well (this is winter golf). I can imagine they are better in growing season but they are ok for winter greens, just slow. The sand bunkers are well maintained for a course that gets a lot of play. The only negative comment I have about the whole experience is the dry, sparse fairways. If they don't water the fairways, they are going from a fairly good golf course to something you wouldn't want to play. There's a lot of water that comes into play as the fairways dogleg around it so shot placement and being able to work the ball is critical. Overall evaluation is it's a course I would return to and that's not the case with everything in this area.

I live on a very nice course in Augusta so when I compliment a course as a new favorite, you can be sure it's got something going for it.It's hard to keep a golf course nice in the winter but you can tell, this place makes an effort. The fairways and tee boxes are overseeded nicely so most places you have turf to hit off of. They must have a lot of play or some negligent golfers because there are a LOT of unsanded divots. There's just enough difficulty in shot placement to make it interesting but not daunting. the sand bunkers could have been improved somewhat but are still better than most mid level courses. One of the most outstanding of their features were the greens. they had been recently sprayed with a liquid green spray so they looked very good. There are bare spots, here and there but they are sanded and being repaired where necessary. Putts run true, I think. Some of the greens have severe slope. I really liked the layout and I will be back if I can arrange a tee time that suits my desires.

Played On 01/26/2024Old time favorite
First time I've played this course in many years and I had to pick a day when they top dressed and fertilitized the greens. However, it was still a fun day from the practice area to the last hole. It looks like the maintenance crew was doing a good job even with a poor growing season.

This is Bradenton's municipal course and as such, you wouldn't expect a great course but that is where the surprise exists. It's definitely my favorite of the area in a course where you can play without a second mortgage on your home. The staff makes the best impression to start with and then the golf is very enjoyable too. It's not a real difficult layout but it is not boring either. They get a LOT of play so be prepared to have a lot of company but staff seems to be always in the right place to monitor play. Greens are healthy for the time of year but as you would expect in dormancy, they are rather slow. For me, it's the best value for the money anywhere within 50 miles.
The Preserve Golf Club
Played On 01/18/2024My second favorite course in the area but.....)
The abundance of cool, cloudy weather and over abundance of rain has rendered the course almost unplayable. Even the staff apologized on the condition. The layout is very challenging until you become used to the demanding shot placement is what makes it one of my favorites. Please keep playing it so they will have the funds to make the necessary repairs.
New Smyrna Golf Club
Played On 04/02/2023Friendly course
This is a very enjoyable round. Four hour playing time on a very crowded facility. Ross design lives up to his reputation in shot placement off the tee. The greens were exceptional, fairways average(could use some water and weed killer) and sand traps could a little more sand. Overall, the course was much better that you would expect for the fee. Definitely my favorite in this area.
Manatee County Golf Course
Played On 02/18/2023big improvement from last play
I reviewed this course last week and emphasized the importance of tee shot placement which could be gained by additional play. The experience I gained cut many strokes off my second round and I played without penalties. You definitely should not hit driver on all tee shots. The experience gained tee to green only helped somewhat, however. The greens took their toll. They look very healthy but are still kinda slow and could use cutting and rolling. Because of that, the breaks are hard to read. I shot two strokes below my age but should have been six strokes better if the putting was better. Like they say, "putt for dough". All things considered, this is a decent "munny" course that is worth the drive for me (50 minutes) and I will play it again next year.
Manatee County Golf Course
Played On 02/18/2023Many penalties today
I had the worst round in 20 or more years but I blame that on myself, not the course and I will not let that reflect on this review. Shot placement is just like any other course, critical, and I was not on my game at all. There are plenty of places to get in trouble and I was in them all! The staff were nice and helpful, especially Chris, the starter. Practice area is good except you hit off mats (there are no mats on a golf course). The fairways were better than expected for a "muny" and hazards are easy to see since the course is so flat. Pace of play was good but not great. Like I said before, it's a well used municipal course. My overall impression is positive with the greens being the exception. They were healthy but extremely slow. They had been recently top dressed and were left sandy instead of watering, rolling, etc. I didn't like the greens at all. Since the topography is flat, most of the greens are on a mound which causes a hump that has to considered on your approach. A short approach cannot be putted onto the green, in most cases.
Heritage Harbour Golf Club
Played On 02/08/2023definitely not for walking
This is a new track, just recently redesigned and configured so it's a little bit hard to follow. We were lucky enough to be paired with someone familiar with the new layout and very enjoyable to play with. If not for him, we would have been turned around several more time than we were! This course is definitely not laid out for someone who is walking (they may not even allow walking). Lots of LONG stretches between holes. A few of the greens are new and haven't completely matured and grown in but overall the course is in very nice condition. The starter is a "hoot" but a few of the other staff were less than welcoming since they knew we were not regulars. The course is in an upscale neighborhood so there was a small amount of snooty atmosphere that could be improved on for welcomeness. Water hazards are abundant but well placed tee shots avoid them easily. Sand bunkers are also abundant and less easy to avoid. However, the bunkers are well maintained and play as they're supposed to for the most part. Overall this will be one of the better courses to play in this area as long as they keep the rates sensible. I'll definitely try to play it again. It was very enjoyable.
River Run Golf Links
Played On 02/04/2023winter favorite
I always play this course every winter when I come down. It's my favorite because of the staff. They are always friendly and do whatever is necessary to make your round enjoyable. It's a "muny" so they get a ton of play but the starter/ranger keeps pace of play as best they can because they are very aware it can be a problem. It's not the fanciest course by any reckoning but the design and condition exceeds the fees considerably and that makes it a good value to play. Unlike most of the other inexpensive courses, they actually have turf to hit off of in the fairways and the bunkers are properly filled with fluffy, maintained sand. The greens are tough to read and a little bit slow but they are healthy. Shot placement is important just like any other course but hooks and slices here will put your shot where it cannot be retrieved.

I return every year to play this course and make it my favorite. Not necessarily because it's the best in the area, Greens are true and predictable, although slower than most. Fairways actually have turf to hit from. Sand bunkers are fluffy and well maintained and water hazards are well marked and avoidable. This course is a good value for the average golfer, maybe not as "fancy" as some others but a good municipal. I'll always play this course when I visit.
Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing River Run Golf Links.
Riverside Golf Course
Played On 01/30/2023course for the "happy hooker"
Course has several holes designed for the right to left shot around water. Bring extra balls! Shot placement off the tee is exacting on most holes. The course could be a much better value and infinitely more enjoyable if they would just put some water on it. The fairways were very dry and they were scalped too short for the dry conditions. I like to hit off turf and you are hard pressed to find very much of that. Staff were very nice and pace of play was good. The carts do not have gps on them and yardage markers were not apparent in most places. I drove almost an hour to get there and not sure I would do it again but if you are close and want to play some inexpensive golf, it's worth a try. Rain or irrigation would help a lot.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Riverside Golf Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Riverside Golf Course
Played On 01/30/2023Make a new friend
Try to be paired with someone familiar with the course (make a new friend). There are several holes that have blind problems that will cost you strokes (and balls) if you are not aware. This lends a little bit of mystery to the course as well as a few strokes. The greens were on the slow side but in decent condition. Sand bunkers needed more sand and/or maintenance but overall the course was a good value for the fees. I will try to play it again just to prove to myself I can do better (typical golfer)!

Bent Tree Country Club
Played On 01/23/2023hidden hazzards
I suggest playing the layout the first time with someone familiar with it. It has several holes with obscured hazzards that can really add strokes to your round. I liked the design and will definitely return to see if I can better my score. The sand traps also need sand and maintenance but there had been enough bad weather to account for that. They may be better after some attention. The greens were in decent shape and ran pretty true with average speed. Pace of play was good considering winter golf in Florida.

Played On 01/23/2023Play with someone who knows the course.
I liked the course well enough for the price which was very appreciated but it has several holes with blind lies that can really put more strokes on your card. I suggest playing with a local that can advise you on these issues. Carry a few extra balls because drive placement is critical usually. The greens are very healthy looking but they needed mowing. I think they are the slowest greens I have ever putted on. That also took a lot of break out of putting so they don't really putt very true. I played with a nice discount from GolfNow which made the value very high. I will play this course again just to show myself I can improve the score.
St. Johns Golf & Country Club
Played On 01/17/2023very slow greens
I liked the course overall as to design and condition in comparison to the cost of play. The only thing that stands out very brightly is the speed of the greens. Their condition was good and they looked very healthy but they were the slowest greens I have ever putted on. The foursome I played with never did get the speed figured out. They needed to be mowed and rolled. Otherwise I enjoyed the round.
St. Johns Golf & Country Club
Played On 01/17/2023enjoyable round
The most dominant characteristic of this course is the greens. They are some of the BEST I have played on and they are very fast. I was impressed with all aspects of the course with the exception of the sand bunkers. Most were good, but some could use more sand. The pace of play was average for winter golf in FL. It's almost always crowded. The starter tried really hard to speed up tee times with cancellations and "no shows". All in all the staff and facilities were very good.
