Milham Park Municipal Golf Course
Played On 03/26/2016Milham Park GC
Weather is obviously key this time of year for course conditions..a lot of places are in decent shape right now and Milham Park also has their place in very solid order. The greens here are in incredible shape right now. Driving range is sufficient; definitely an old school feel in some corners of the course. If you play the back tees and you're driver isn't going 260+ there will be several approach shots from around 200 yards. Solid practice putting green near the clubhouse and the fairways are very playable.
Harbor Shores
Played On 07/29/2015Harbor Shores
Everything is on point pretty much as soon as you hop out of your vehicle. The practice facilities are what more courses should be like; you could really improve with what's available here. From the black tees the course has teeth, and wind is a major factor pretty much all the way around. Lake Michigan is not as prevalent as it is marketed to be, it is a beautiful golf course but there is way more highway/road frontage than there is frontage on Lake Michigan which makes the course seem loud in places. Overall it's a very nice place with a very goofy layout between holes.
Lake Cora Hills
Played On 06/27/2015Late June Lake Cora Hills
This golf course has been steadily making improvements over about the past 5 years. If you haven't been here in a while, it wouldn't be a bad idea to visit. Lake Cora is always one of the better values on golfnow.com.
Each of 9's have different qualities. The front nine is rather short even from the blue tees..par 35 but the lack of yardage doesn't make it easy, OB is a realistic possibility on 4-5 holes. Very target-oriented and tons of slopes and hills in most of the fairways.
The back nine seems to be about a decade or so newer design-wise. Par 37 with 3 par 5's. The key on this side is to get off the tee box well; markedly longer than the front 9. Hole #13 is probably a "signature hole" it's a medium-length par 5 with water and marsh everywhere, the second shot on this hole is very difficult..it doesn't matter where your tee shot went or whether or not you're going for it/laying-up. Hole 18 is a very tight driving hole and other than that the back nine is pretty much in front of you. The course has nice color and the greens roll nicely at comfortable speeds. Some holes are prone to getting a bit saturated if a ton of rain rolls through. The course staff is always very pleasant and accommodating.
West at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort
Played On 05/03/2015Gull Lake View- West
For it being pretty early in the season, the course was in surprising shape! The fairways and roughs are great..the greens were still coming along, still pretty slow. I didn't know what to expect with this course because I've played the Stonehedge's and Bedford Valley which are owned by the same family but the West course seems to be just as nice and thought out as the other "bigger" courses.
There is so much undulation on this golf course. Definitely an old-school design with the green complexes. Combination of tough driving holes tough approach shots on several holes. The course seems longer than it is on paper. There are a few long par 3's to keep you focused.
I would definitely recommend Gull Lake View West.
Heritage Glen Golf Club
Played On 04/30/2015Heritage Glen Golf Club
I would say that Heritage Glen is one of the best conditioned courses available in the Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids area. I played 18 holes before May 1 and every one of the 18 greens had fully recovered from aerating. The course can get a little bit mushy in certain areas..but for the most part the course has a lot of color right now and the greens are easily the quickest I've played on this spring.
Carts are nice and new-ish and the course layout is easily understood, no wondering if you're hitting/driving toward the proper hole. Absolutely worth a hot deal.
Olde Mill Golf Course
Played On 08/08/2014Pleasantly Surprised
I hadn't been to this golf course in a few years because it was a bit of a hike for a pretty average course. Fast forward to mid-season 2014 and WOW!! Completely revamped look to the clubhouse/pro-shop area, and the stuffy bar has been turned into a spacious restaurant. The golf course has seen a ton of improvements also. There is so much color out on the course where it used to be baked out, the greens are about as good as you'll see in the area. If you're like me and haven't been here in a while..go.
Lake Doster Golf Club
Played On 08/07/2014Nice course, tougher than it is on paper
I've been to Lake Doster several times now and I'm always pleased with the course. Every now and again it can get a little backed up pace-wise but that could also be due to the amount of trouble on the course! Lots of areas to waste strokes here, and the greens are pretty tricky to read..generally quite speedy too. Don't get careless on the really short holes but don't get greedy either because you might write a triple down on the card!
Blossom Trails
Played On 07/26/2014Short strategic golf course
The golf course is in pretty average shape, very playable though. Course features include a few very short risk/reward holes. Accuracy will definitely help you into many of the tiny greens, which are pretty undulating for their size. The pro shop is pretty old but the food is very good and nicely priced. Overall the place is decent and worth visiting with a few friends.
Ridgeview Golf Course
Played On 07/01/2014Classic design, player friendly course
This golf course is in very favorable condition. An odd/unique aspect of the course is the complete lack of water hazards...there are zero. The back nine is definitely the harder nine to score on. Greens are in solid shape, extremely receptive to a well-struck shot. Picking the right club on the tee of a lot of par 4's will make things easier.
Sauganash Country Club
Played On 06/30/2014Unique blend of hole designs
Two distinctly different nines. The front nine is tiny, cramped in a few spots and the back is very long and spread out. Lots of tree-lined fairways and strategic opportunities on par 4's throughout the course. Clubhouse could use some modernization but the course is fun. Old-school green complexes...many have steep runoff areas and tricky bunkers.
Thanks for taking the time to review the course Ali1. Our grounds crew tries very hard to keep the course in great shape. We hope to see you again in the near future!
