Fox Run at Golf Courses at Kenton County, The
Played On 09/06/2018Muni golf at its Average
I played here regularly when a job took me here once a month. Last time was 7 years ago. This course is the best one of the three at this municipal golf complex. The prices are reasonable and the course is OK...average. But it is accessible, playable, and a not bad round of golf. Play it for fun.
Nevel Meade Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2018Did not dissappoint
I played here many times while on business and last played 5 years ago. Back in the area again and I couldn't wait to play. It did not disappoint.
The course was in very good condition and the greens were well maintained. The layout was as challenging and fun to play as I remembered. The car ride to the course was also a pleasurable trip through classic Kentucky.
I hope to be back again soon.
French Lick Resort - The Donald Ross Course
Played On 09/02/2018A design that stands the test of time...
Designed so many years ago by a golf legend but it stands the test of time. As up-to-date as the Dye course but you can sense the classic design elements of bunkering and green sloping. What you don't find is a course that has lost its ability to challenge and test the golfer. Length isn't the only way to make a course. More designers need to follow some of the classic elements you'll find here.
Seminole Legacy Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2018A well worn course, spotty conditions and slow play abound
The course is connected to Florida State. It's not their official "home course' but it's where the players practice and hang out. The course is an older design -- traditional parkland golf. There are 5 tees boxes ranging from a slope of 114 to 129. There is always a lot of people playing so rounds can easily stretch into 5 hours.
Most holes are pretty straight and the fairways are tight but the course is fairly wide open and the rough is cut low so a missed fairway is not too much of a problem. Prices are reasonable and the round will be fun but not something to write home about.
SouthWood Golf Club
Played On 08/23/2018One of the better course in the Tallahassee area
SouthWood is one of the handful of really quality courses in the Tallahassee area. It's a Fred Couples design with 4 sets of men's tees playing a slope from 107 to 135. You can pick your level of challenge.
The holes are fairly straight forward - you can see where to play and where to miss. Bunker have been placed to help define the course and most are not too difficult to play from. Some of the dogleg par 4s require a less-than-driver shot so be mindful of distance. You'l find both long and short par 3s so scoring can be made. I really like the closing stretch with 16 a double dogleg par5 with water, 17 a nice longish par 3, and 18 a par long par 4 requiring a well-placed tee and approach.
The summer months can take a toll on the greens but they were fine when I played. Enjoy the round.
Golden Eagle Country Club
Played On 08/22/2018A must play course
I have played several Fazio designed courses (World Woods, Barton Creek, Red Sky Ranch, Amelia Island, The Farm, Reynolds, and others). He is prolific and he is good. This is an earlier design just around the time he was getting very popular. The course is well maintained and the holes are challenging but fair. It is a pleasure to play. Also, spend some time at the practice facilities which are also worth a visit.
Chattanooga Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/23/2018A wonderful course. Very playable with fast greens.
The CGCC is a private course and I was fortunate to get an opportunity to play. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. We played from the White tees which is just 6800 yard but rated at 124.
The course has it's challenges. There are some tight fairways, elevated greens, and bunkers just where they can catch errant tee and approach shots. The elevated greens add a particular challenge if that's not what you are used to.
The two nines both end with par 3 holes, somewhat unusual for modern layouts but this course was built in 1896. It is a Donald Ross design and according to the scorecard built 8 years after the first course in the USA.
If you have the opportunity to play, don't pass it up.
Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 06/26/2018An absolute must-play location...
The two courses at World Woods (not to mention the par-3 course, and 3-hole warm-up course) are a must play when you are in the Tampa area. Pine Barrens is the higher rated course, a great design, and a challenge to play. The word is that the design is comparable to Pine Valley -- always the #1 or #2 rated course in the world.
When you travel here, schedule 3-4 days...play golf, practice at their world-class practice facility, and enjoy your visit. There is not much in the way of hotels or restaurants in the immediate area but the seclusion lends itself to a focused golf trip with your group.
Rolling Oaks at World Woods Golf Club

The two courses at World Woods (not to mention the par-3 course, and 3-hole warm-up course) are a must play when you are in the Tampa area. Iron Horse Golf Course
Played On 03/07/2018Classic muni course but with some memorable holes
This is a classic municipal golf course. Conditions are just bareable and greens are spotty.
I do like holes 10 & 11. The par 4, 10th requires are targeted drive and a careful shot to a green over a creek. The par 5 11th , is a classic risk/reward second shot into an elevated green just over water (unless you hit solid long irons/hybrids, lay-up). Other than those two holes, nothing else really stands out.
Tour 18 Dallas
Played On 03/06/2018Fun to play and dream....
Ever dream of playing on the PGA Tour? Here is your chance...with plenty of imagination need. While the holes are laid out just like the tour holes (like the island green of Sawgrass on the #9 hole) you need a good dose of imagination to envision the hole as it truly exists. For example, 17 & 18 here are Augusta National's 12 & 13. Yardages, hole shape, creeks, all are similarly laid out. But where are the pine trees? Where are the Azaleas?
The course is well-maintained and the course is fun to play but it is not a location that is going to be on my ongoing rotation for DFW play.
Trophy Club Country Club - Whitworth Course
Played On 03/05/2018Nice course. Nice club. Nothing Special...
The two courses at Trophy Club are fairly similar. Nothing to write home about. You get to play golf on courses that are fairly well-maintained but the layouts are somewhat boring. If you are not a member, be polite and play with your host. But don't make a special trip here as there are plenty of better layouts to play in DFW.
Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club
Played On 03/04/2018Should be more highly rated
This course deserves a higher rating than it's getting. It is a wonderful layout with a nice variety of long and short holes. Greens are always true. The upside of its lower rating is because it is not on the DFW map of "great" courses, the pace of play is wonderful. Please, keep it a secret.
The Golf Club At Fossil Creek
Played On 03/03/2018A nice Palmer design...but slow play abounds
I've played this course several times. WHile the layout is great and the course conditions are solid, the pace of play is often too slow. I have played more than my share of 5+ hour rounds here. If you play, go out real early and save yourself from the backlog.
The Golf Club at Champions Circle
Played On 03/02/2018Conditions can be spotty
I've played this course several times. Conditions can be spotty but March 2018 all was good. The layout is a bit tricky but overall a good challenge to your game. I'm not a fan of Greg Norman designs as they seem to be designed to be penal not challenging.
Hidden Creek Golf Club
Played On 03/01/2018A fun round...for a muni
The course is well maintained and provides for a fun round. Nothing too challenging. Conditions are good -- especially for a muni course. Worth a trip to sharpen your game.
McLemore Club - Highlands Course
Played On 01/03/2018Course is changing....
The Canyon Ridge course closed for renovations and will be re-opened as The McLemore Club. The old design has a lot of blind shots and very hilly. The hills will obviously remain but the plans are to fix some of the holes to make it more playable. Let's see.
Windstone Golf & Country Club
Played On 11/20/2017A variety of hole designs with challenges on every hole
This was my second time playing Windstone and I really enjoy this course. It is not very long (6626y from the tips; 6092y from blue) but there is a challenge somewhere out there on almost every hole. There are many elevation changes both up and down, water on at least a third of the hole, and trees on every fairway. Most of the fairways are wide enough for a mishit here and there but if you spray your shots, you will lose a lot of balls. The greens are A1A Bent and roll well with gentle slopes on most hole with a couple more dramatic. I played in November so the greens were not cut short and were average in speed. I would imagine that in fairer weather, the greens would be a bit faster.
I found it strange that I played every par 3 with the same club as the yardage being 5 yards apart on all 4 holes. Other than that, a variety of tee shots are required and a variety of approach shots depending on the green location uphill or downhill from the fairway. All in all, this is a very playable course for any handicap.
One more strange item about the club. There is no locker room for either the men or the women. There is a pro shop and a grill with bathrooms. Come ready to play at this course!!
Heatherhurst Golf Club - The Brae Course
Played On 11/17/2017Another short layout at Fairfield Glades...with foursomes going off at 1 & 10. WTF!
This was the second course I played over a weekend at Fairfield Glades. This was another annoying short course (see my review on Druid Hills) with the tips at 6171y. When I played I had a foursome with me, a married couple, and an 90 year old senior. Playing from 4 tee boxes was itself a trial. But what really surprised me was the course sending off foursomes in the morning from #1 and #10. I was in the first group off of #10 so the front side was completed without anyone slowing us down ahead. But it still too over 2.5 hours to finish 9. Then at the turn, we had one free hole and then we caught up to the groups who went off the other half. It took us 3 hours to finish that 9. In all, a 5.5 hour round. Add to that, another annoyingly sort course and you have a very frustrating day.
The course itself is in fine condition but who can enjoy the layout with such a long round. My overall impression of laying two Fairfield Glades courses over two days is that the locale is best suited for seniors and those who don't mind waiting on every shot. If you are a low handicap player, find another place to play.
Druid Hills Golf Club
Played On 11/16/2017Beautiful views on a short course
OK. I am not some low handicap amateur. I don't hit it a mile -- average drive, 230; 7-iron, 150. Having said that, it was very frustrating to play this very short course. The tips are 6270y and it goes down from there. This course is best suited for seniors. The fairways and greens were in nice shape but it was no fun hitting through the fairway with a fairly decent 220y drive. Irons off a par 4 tee!!! Not for me.
