Fairways & Greens

I like this place. Fairways and greens are always in great shape. Bunkers could use some attention but I think the heavy rain the day before delayed maintenance. The holes can be tight, water comes into play often and the greens are small. Like most of these neighborhood courses there are one or two quirky holes that seem squeezed into the layout.
The practice green was decent. The practice range employs floating balls, no mats, however as you’re hitting off turf. For the money I think this place is worth playing.

Steep hills and lots of water.

El Campion is a difficult track with extreme elevation changes on several holes. Many tight driving holes as well with narrow fairways. The greens are flawless. The fairways were beautiful. The tee boxes were OK and the bunkers were well maintained. The rough is brutally long. Allowing Bermuda grass to grow 6 to 8 inches is just stupid. They really ought to do something about this. All it does is slow down play. Lots of water, too with some forced carry shots. Bring plenty of balls.

Weedy Beast

At one time I’m sure this place was a magnificent beast. It’s still a beast but it is no way magnificent. Practice green was damaged, but the range was ok. Hitting off grass to downhill targets. There are weeds and crabgrass everywhere, throughout the fairways and the rough, around the greens and bunkers. Very disappointing. The greens had recently been punched and sanded. They should be pretty good in a few weeks, though several were plagued with bare spots. Too bad. This place could be great. It just needs a ton of work. Save your money and spend it elsewhere.

Fast greens, Slow play

Hit off grass on the range. Big fast practice green. Weird very sloped chipping area with bunker. Tee boxes a little beat up. Good fairways. Super fast big greens. Several challenging holes. Nice layout that keeps your interest. Slow pace of play is always likely here. Played here half a dozen times and have always enjoyed it.

Always enjoy playing here. Range, practice green/chipping green are great. Could use a better practice bunker. Tee boxes are fine but the fairways were plagued with poa annua throughout. It was sometimes growing in the aprons around the greens. What I really love about this place is the greens. The nicest you’ll find in the area. Not very receptive but boy do they roll great, and they look great. Not a blemish on them. I found several of the par 4’s to be too long. I drive the ball about 210-215 and I’m frequently hitting a 3 wood or 3 hybrid into the greens. There were no senior tees to play from and I didn’t want to play from the ladies tees. The bunkers are not very well kept.

Baytowne

Tee time was 7:47. Delayed until 7:55. Good pace of play, however. Range was not open until 8:00. Frustrating. You’d think they’d have it ready for the early tee times. Poor management. Nice big practice green with chipping and a bunker. White tees play under 6,000 yards so not terribly long. Tee boxes and fairways all in good shape. Greens are very small and somewhat receptive, average speed, no bare spots. Bunkers all had rakes. Wish more people used them. Lots of OB. One goofy, narrow par four straight up hill with OB left and right. A bad hole. Nearly impossible to reach in two for the average hitter, especially with the prevailing winds off the gulf.

Single For 18 Holes

First time playing here. Loved it! Smallish practice green and chipping area. Grass driving range with pond and floater balls. Starter let me go out on my own. He told me I’d catch up with the men’s group and their tournament. Sure enough by number 3 I did. They moved along at a decent pace but I had plenty of wait time. The tee boxes could use a little TLC. The fairways were nice and the greens were receptive and rolled true. Best greens I’ve found around this area (and I’m picky about greens). It’s a challenging layout with its share of water. Several doglegs that will cause you to think.
Don’t pass this place up. You will love it, too. I would play here again in a heartbeat.

Medium size practice green. Good shape except for a large damaged section on the backside. There is a practice bunker with a decent chipping green. Plenty of Bermuda grass on the range with various flagged targets. 6 tee boxes to choose from. They were in good shape. The course weaves around this retirement community with some distance between the greens and tee boxes. Wide, generous, healthy Bermuda fairways w/ strategic bunkering. No rough. Some weeds along the fairway edges. Some wet penalty areas, too along with several ponds. Greens were punched several weeks ago. They’re still a little bumpy but healthy. Number 3 green had a large damaged area and the par 5 number 11 is under repair but it’s playable. Nice, healthy green complexes and decent bunkers makes for short game playability.

Slow Play

Slow play is a problem just about everywhere but nobody seems to want to do anything about it. This place in no different. No marshals here. Our foursome waited on every tee box. The cart girl and all cart personnel, for that matter must stop serving people in the fairways and around the greens. They need to make their sales at the tee boxes. That way guys can tee off while their partners make their purchases. It helps speed up play.

Course conditions were good. Tee boxes a little beat up, fairways had plenty of turf. Greens rolled with medium speed with no bare spots. Bunkers playable. It can be a tight course with water and a lot of OB and PA along the bay. Wind is always a factor here, too. The driving range is terrible. No grass, irons only.

Enjoyable

Not a terribly long course from the white tees at 5900. It stretches out to 6900 from the tips. Tee boxes are okay. No giant divots or bare ground. Obvious they move the tee markers often. Finely cut allies between the tees makes for a nice touch. Fairways are in good shape. No weeds or bare spots. They keep the Bermuda rough cut down, too. THANK YOU! The greens are very, very nice and the holes were freshly cut (nice!). They also use those plastic ring inserts on the holes. I don’t mind them if they are installed properly…and lo and behold THEY WERE! It was a very enjoyable 18 holes. There is a nice big practice green and a decent chipping and pitching area as well as practice bunkers. They even have a bunker on the range so you can practice fairway bunkers shots. You don’t find that anywhere! My only complaint: mats on the driving range.

Nice Experience.

It’s been a couple of years since I played here. In that time they’ve rebuilt the greens and they are very nice and rolling well. The holes didn’t appear to be freshly cut, however. We’ve had a lot of rain lately so it was cart path only; some soggy areas to contend with. Bunker sand was uniform, no standing water. The range was closed due to the soggy conditions. Carts are nice, beverage ladies were friendly and attentive, bag drop guy and starter very pleasant. Only saw the marshal once. Upscale clubhouse. Overall this place has always been a very nice experience.

Muni Golf

I’ve played here a bunch of times. The greens are always slow. The slowest muni greens I’ve ever played on. Rolling less than 8, I’ll bet. They’re in pretty good shape but they are spongey, grainy and slow. Biggest complaint is the holes are old and ragged. I’ll bet they cut them two to three times a month, tops. They were worn out and terrible! The Bermuda fairways have improved and the aprons around the greens are lush. Some junky weeds and tuffs of crab grass throughout the rough. Bunkers were ok only because many players don’t rake after using them. This place gets a good amount of traffic. Typical muni golf.

Conditions

Like so many old courses this one is overgrown. Trees impinge on many of the fairways creating bare ground and tight driving corridors. This place could benefit by removing about 500 of them. Overall the fairways are thin with inconsistent grasses and weeds. The big Bermuda greens are lush and slow. I don’t know why they can’t cut them lower. The aprons surrounding the greens were in very good condition, too. There is a decent practice chipping and pitching area with two bunkers. The practice green is enormous and driving range is adequate.

Water water everywhere

Irons only driving range. Undulating practice green. Condition and speed is representative of what you’ll find on course. Tee boxes in average shape. Some fairways feel a little tight from the tee. Water on many holes. Great views of Choctawhatchee Bay. Course weaves through neighborhoods. Green complexes are good and well maintained. Course was a little wet from recent hurricane. No visible damage, though. Bunkers were good. Only saw one with water in it. Greens a little soft and thin. Ball took some weird breaks. Medium speed but didn’t roll as true as one would hope. Hole edges a bit worn out.

Love this course

Decent range. Nice practice green, representative of what you’ll find on course. Tee boxes in good shape. Course is laid out in front of you. No tricks. Fairways I are nice and plenty wide. Always a good lie. No bare patches or crab grass. Miss the fairway and you will have tree trouble. Thick underbrush beyond. Water is not visible from tee. Green complexes are fair and in great shape. Bunkers are good, just enough sand to splash one out. Greens are big enough and the best in NW Florida; firm, medium fast with a true roll, no lumps or bumps, no thin or bare patches . Such a pleasure.

Water water everywhere

Friendly staff. OK layout. Lots of water and wetlands in play, especially on the front. Several forced carries, too. Not for me. To make matters worse the course received 4" of rain the night before making the track a soggy mess. As you can imagine no roll and lots of plugged balls. Don't bother playing here if it has rained a lot. The greens were true, rolling around 8 to 9. I'm OK with that. Fast greens are no fun.
