Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 07/26/2014Good course, good value, need more drinking water!
Crooked Cat at Orange County National is a good course and a good value. Unfortunately it has exactly two locations to get drinking water on the course, and in Orlando that's simply unacceptable.
The course is in excellent condition, and the new greens are rolling great.
It's a good test from any of the tees, and there are a lot of them so play a set that feels right or mix and match to play a variety of holes.
Definitely recommend, but bring water to drink!
Disney's Palm Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2014Upgraded Palm Course
Enjoyed playing the upgraded Palm Course on Saturday, July 12, 2014. If you've played the course in the past the overall layout is basically the same, except for the 13th hole, and all the green complexes have been completely rebuilt. They also removed and reshaped many of the fairway bunkers.
The greens were firm and fast while the rest of the course was still very wet. Not surprising since the greens are clearly still bedding in and it's been a rainy last week or so in Orlando.
Overall, the new green complexes and revised fairway bunkering plan make for a more enjoyable and interesting golf course. There are many more options off the tee and a much greater variety of shots and choices available when missing a green.
The only hole that was dramatically changed is the short par four 13th. In the past it was a relatively uninteresting fairway wood - short iron or driver - wedge choice with little risk and reward. The new hole is a driveable with the green pushed up right next to the water on the right. There's a ton of room left to bail out, but that can leave a very tricky second over a bunker to a shallow green with water behind.
My only complaint is that the course still doesn't drain very well. We were relegated to cart-path only which can make for a long day slogging through very wet conditions.
The changes provide a good new experience at Disney and help differentiate the Palm Course from the longer and tougher Magnolia.
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort
Played On 02/13/2014Fantastic!
The Ocean Course is fantastic. Lucky enough to play it multiple times when my family used to vacation at Kiawah.
When it opened the course was overly difficult. Now it's only extremely difficult if the breeze is up. Over the years the edges have been softened to allow a little more room to maneuver.
Don't play it all the way back, especially in the wind.
Play match play so you don't have to keep score!
Have fun and enjoy the amazing views!
Oakmont Country Club
Played On 02/13/2014Very Hard!
Played Oakmont with a college teammate in 1997.
Oakmont has a reputation as one of the most difficult courses in the world. It's well earned.
The course is long and tight with thick rough and the fastest greens you'll find anywhere.
That said, it's a great experience and a can't miss if you get the chance.
Cypress Point Club
Played On 02/13/2014Tops on the Monterey Peninsula
I didn't really place this course in 2014. It would have been in the early 2000s.
Cypress Point is, quite simply, breathtaking. Incredible scenery, incredible golf, incredible experience. If given the opportunity do whatever you can to play it.
PGA National Resort - Fazio Course
Played On 01/28/2014Classic Resort Fare
The Fazio Course at PGA National is classic resort fare. It was in good shape, the weather was beautiful and the pace of play was good.
The course is not overly difficult. There is water on a number of holes, but it's not overwhelming. The front nine twists and turns a lot so it could be easy to get in trouble with the many doglegs. The back nine is more gentle with the bends.
Be very careful with the drive on 18, there's water all the way up the left and basically no buffer between the fairway and the hazard.
West Orange Country Club
Played On 01/25/2014Solid Track, Easy Walk
West Orange Country Club isn't the longest or hardest course you'll play. It is a good challenge, a great course to walk, and will test your game. Generally tight with firm, slick, and sloping greens, accuracy is at a premium from tee to green.
Be careful of water short/left of the first green and don't dare go left of the pin on number 5.
Otherwise, enjoy the day and especially the walk!
TPC Sawgrass - THE PLAYERS Stadium Course
Played On 10/15/2013Pete Dye Classic
The Stadium Course is known for the island green at number 17 as the center point of the dramatic final three holes.
It should also be known as a classic Pete Dye test where there's more to every hole than what you can see. Tricking the eye is a staple in golf course architecture and Pete Dye does it as well as anyone.
Course is difficult, but also fun to play. The final three are great risk/reward holes and you have to love the island green!
