Battle Lake Golf Course
Played On 04/18/2020Fun course, nice walk
The course was a nice surprise and has more going for it than most off-the-beaten-path Texas courses. The course plays in and around a valley and has a nice variety of holes and elevation changes. Get a tee time, the course fills up sometimes.
Eagle Pointe Golf Club
Played On 11/10/2019One of the top public courses in Greater Houston
I had heard that Eagle Pointe was good, but I had heard that about other courses in the Houston area and was usually let down. Flat and wet land doesn't lend itself to great golf courses, and Houston has more than its share of wet, flat land. Eagle Point is an outlier, and sits very comfortably on rolling, mostly secluded, land. You know you're in for something different on the first tee where you start with a downhill tee shot to a side-hill landing area where the lay of the land will steer your ball toward a natural stream that zig-zags all along the left side of the hole. That same stream then veers right and crosses the fairway, challenging you to carry it - or layup - on your uphill second shot into the Par 5 first.
The greens are varied and in great shape, as were tees, greens, bunkers and roughs. I would really have to stretch to find something critical to say, with the low hanging fruit being the comparatively weak and uninspired 17th and 18th holes. Both holes sit on the flattest part of the property and are out of the step with the rest of the course in both look and shot values.
Chambers County Golf Course
Played On 11/10/2019Off the beaten path, casual, fun
This is a nice golf course that plays through some fairly wooded acreage. Although every hole is framed by trees, for the most part they are sparse enough - and the fairways wide enough - that with a few exceptions decent drives will go unpunished. The greens were in very nice shape and rolled very true. Fairways and roughs were soggy and not at the level of the greens, but it did not detract from the round at all, and probably reflects a good use of resources by course management.
The course tips out a 6,800 which, in combination with pretty slow fairways, presents a stout golf course from the Blue Markers. The course had few cars in the lot when I arrived without a tee time at 10am on a nice Saturday morning and I was able to walk the course in under 2.5 hours.
The Bandit Golf Club
Played On 11/04/2019Unique, challenging, fun, and frustrating
There is a lot to like about this course, and a few things that you could pick on. This golf course comes at you with a lot of challenging shots, and a varied collection of holes where each is distinct from the others. The course sits on naturally rolling land and some of the coolest features of the course take advantage of that; the green complex on #5 being a great example. That said, at times the design leans too heavily on elevated tees which detracted from the routing and reduces the walkability of the course greatly.
Lastly, and I hate to be that guy, but the green speeds were actually too much and detracted from the fun of the round. I have played thousands of rounds on hundreds of golf courses, including Tour stops within days of the event and at world class top ranked courses. I don't recall ever playing faster greens.
Kissing Tree Golf Club
Played On 09/08/2019A great addition to Central Texas
This is a expansive golf course, with some massive fairways, nice elevation changes, and big segmented greens that make this a true second-shot track. The grass is mature and the course is grown in nicely. This is a very fun golf course that does not beat you up. Large fairways that take advantage of some hilly terrain make driving easier here than most courses. The greens are large and in nice shape, but their defense is the many tiers and segments they contain. Hitting to the correct section of the green is the key to scoring.
This is a 55+ real estate community that doesn't have many houses on the course, yet. The design has some extremely long drives between some holes, so it's not a good walking course.
It's a short course at 6600 yards from the tips. There's a nice mix of short and long holes, and the finishing hole is a TRUE driveable Par 4, slighly downhill and only 287 from the back tees. Miss right and you're wet. It's a fun finish to a fun course.
Bay Forest Golf Course
Played On 09/04/2019Good course, great conditions
This course far exceeded my expectations in both the quality of the design and the condition of the golf course. While the course sits on typical Houston terrain (dead flat) the greens, bunkers, and really cool grass bunkers elevate the visual impact on your round. Alongside the typically flat terrain you will find typically ample water hazards; there is water in play on 16 holes. I knew there was a lot of water going into the round and it was one of the reasons I didn't have high expectations; that much water rarely equates to fun. The fairways played wide, however, and it helped provide a round with a healthy mix of do-or-die shots and safe options for most players. With that said, I suspect beginners and physically weaker players might find the course to be too punishing.
The conditions were superb and the best I have played in Texas all year. The greens were fast and fair and very interesting as well. Great job, Bay Forest.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Golf Course
Played On 08/26/2019The course is closing, and that's the only reason to play there
I had low expectations going into the round and the course failed to meet even a low bar. This is a bad golf course, in bad condition, that is being neglected at the end of its life. I've played 400+ golf courses in my life and this ranks as the worst I've seen. The greens are painted green, spotty, very bumpy, and infested with different types of grass and weeds. The turf in the fairway is as thick and difficult as any rough you'd ever play. Drives in the fairway get lost about half the time.
I think Tour Pros can do pretty much anything yet I have my doubts that many could break par on this course in the condition it is in. I'm a single-digit player and shot 15 over, playing winter rules throughout, not taking penalties for balls lost in the fairway (I lost 8 in the fairway), and raking anything inside 4 feet.
I guess they are going to convert the course into a park. I think they only thing they have to do is remove the flags. I'ts already barely recognizable as a golf course.
Hideout Golf Club
Played On 08/11/2019Great golf club
This off-the-beaten-path club was a two hour drive for me, and worth every minute. The course sits in a little valley and plays a full 18 hole loop before returning you to the clubhouse. The place has a great vibe and once you get away on #1 you are at one with nature for almost the remainder of the round.
This is one of those courses where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The design itself could be better, there aren't many memorable holes, and there are a lot of Par 4's that look and play almost identically. But the vibe is great, and the conditions are as good as any course I've played in Texas in a long time. The greens are bent grass, which is very rare this far south and is a real treat to play on.
This course is worthy of being considered in the Top 25 public courses in the state and is worth a drive from Austin or the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Club at Falcon Point, The
Played On 07/11/2019Unique, fun, target golf
Fun course that, like many in the Houston area, plays through a residential neighborhood. However, the playing corridors aren't overly narrow and the ample water presents more of a threat than out-of-bounds. This is a fun course but I suspect the fun decreases as your handicap increases. There are a lot of target golf holes where you are forced to play to specific yardages, hit to blind landing areas, and navigate from Point A to Point B with little option but to follow the prescribed line of play. Not everyone's cup of tea, and definitely will beat you up if you're having an off day, or just aren't very good. If you have played other Von Hagge courses then none of this will surprise you.
Lahinch Golf Club - Old Course
Played On 06/14/20195 Stars all the way
We had to play off mats as it was just ahead of the Irish Open, but we knew that going into the round. The course is wild, windy, quirky, and insanely fun. Our caddy was great and the course was extremely fair; bad shots brutally punished, great shots rewarded, and marginal shots almost always still findable and playable. If this course isn't worth 5 stars then there are almost no courses with that score.
Forest Creek Golf Club
Played On 03/21/2019Firm, fast, and fun
The greens rolled as smooth and true as any I have played in a long time. Fairways were tight and fast as well, and gave you a lot of options to fly the ball, bounce it, or roll it into the greens. I don't agree with the comments about the conditions or dirt fairways.
Sapelo Hammock Golf Club
Played On 12/29/2018Great little club
Fun golf course with a good variety of holes. The course was very wet when I played, but it was still very playable. I had played other local courses that same week and they were not as playable as Sapelo. The course is a little off the beaten path but was worth the 45 minute drive to play it. It is not an easy golf course, with several forced carries that are likely to be a bit much for lesser players. The par 3's are difficult but repetitive, with the last three playing to almost identical yardages with very similar shot values. It's also not a walker friendly routing, with several very long treks between green and tee. But despite those shortcomings it's a very fun, very pretty, course with a nice laid back vibe and definitely worth playing.
The Club at Savannah Harbor
Played On 12/27/2018Great management, good golf course.
This is a very well run club with a pristine club house, excellent staff, and great customer service. The course is very well maintained and you get the sense throughout the round that there is attention to detail regarding every aspect of your experience on and off the course. It is not, however, a great golf course and had I paid the rack rate to play I would have felt disappointed. It is a very large course, sitting on a sprawling parcel of land. While the fairways are moderately wide, there is ample room to recover from all but the worst of shots. The flat nature of the property and its proximity to marshland make for a somewhat one-dimensional course, with similar shots and strategy on a large number of holes. For the most part the holes are either straight forward with little to intimidate the player, or they abut wetlands/water and present a risk-reward approach; bail out or risk a lost ball.
Olympia Hills Golf Course
Played On 08/05/2018Very good from start to finish
Really enjoyed this golf course, which presents a very nice variety of holes, good conditions, and interesting greens. This is a challenging course by public golf standards, and demands reasonably struck shots right up until the finishing holes, which open up and allow you to end with your foot on the gas.
Red Wolf Golf Resort
Played On 08/02/2018Pleasantly average
Friendly staff with greens and bunkers that were in nice condition were the highlights of the round. The golf course itself is unremarkable but fun. Most holes are of the garden variety; straight forward and not very unique. There are a few good holes of note, however. 3 is a testy 1-shot hole with water hard up against the apron of a very narrow green. 9 is a beast of a par 4 that is narrow, long (499 yards), and with water guarding the green. The back nine is stronger than the front with 11,12, and 16-18 being pretty strong holes that stand out from the rest.
Sawmill Woods Golf Course
Played On 07/26/2018Weird, unique, terrible, fun
I've played some weird golf courses and this one is at or near the top of the heap. It is loaded with narrow and demanding holes that demand compromise by the player because the margin for error is very small. I was playing off a 6 handicap when I played here and by the end of the first hole I knew my challenge was to finish the round with the ball I started with. I was NOT successful, after my ball struck the trees in the MIDDLE of the fairway on #7, there was insufficient width to hook a recovery shot around them, and my Srixon was lost somewhere in the woods on the right of the hole.
This isn't a course I'd want to play every day, and if I wanted to be a golf snob I could write a lot about the oddities found on this course. But sometimes it's fun to play something really out of the ordinary, and challenge yourself to play the game in an unfamiliar way. I had a blast playing there, and I'd recommend you give it a shot too. Just leave the driver in the bag.
The woman in the Pro Shop was awesome and the staff has a friendly vibe. The shop is loaded with golf clubs, mostly of some vintage. It's like a museum of 80's and 90's (and earlier) golf club designs and is worth a few minutes of your time just looking at all the cool old sticks they have.
Penobscot Valley Country Club
Played On 07/25/2018Great course, not so great conditions
This is a very cool course, and if you're an architecture aficionado there is a lot to soak in here. There is a lot of movement to the land and the course sits very nicely on it; there really are no bad holes.
The greens were in pretty good shape, although very wet with sprinklers running on a lot of them even during my round. Fairways were spotty with a lot of crab grass and bare patches mixed in.
This is a good golf course that could be great with improved conditions.
Heritage Oaks Golf Course
Played On 06/27/2018Terrible experience
I called the pro shop at noon and asked if I would need a tee time if I came over around 4:30. I was told no problem, no outings or events were happening. I drove 1.5 hours, from Katy, and arrived at 4:30. The course was closed. No one there, pro shop locked, no carts, no people, nothing.
Moody Gardens Golf Course
Played On 06/27/2018Unique and very fun.
Fun course with a very diverse collection of holes. The conditions were superb and so was the service and pace of play. Highly recommended.
Independence Golf Course
Played On 06/22/2018Exceeds expectations by a wide margin
What a great little golf course! Fairways and greens, while slow, were in great shape. Greens are very interesting, with some wild contours and difficult falloffs. Played 9 in one hour flat. Worth checking out.
Wow - Thank you for the five star review JDNJTX! We are happy to have exceeded your expectations. Our playing conditions are very important to us and we are glad you enjoyed them. We look forward to having you back again soon! Until then, take care!
