Got a great deal so I went to BCG for the first time. Good practice areas and they are making them better. Good GPS on carts. Greens were healthy but sometimes unpredictable ( some slow, some fast; some receptive, some not). Fairways fairly good. Traps good. Reasonable difficulty from senior tees.
Buffalo Creek Golf Course
Played On 10/31/2023Nice quiet course.
This is a good quiet place to play without spending a lot of money. It is in good shape considering how dry things have been.
Springport Hills Golf Course
Played On 08/21/2023More user friendly
The new management has cut down the tall field grass that lined a number of holes. Instead of your ball being hopelessly lost, you can now find it and play it. This makes for a much more enjoyable round of golf.
The fairways were green and full. The greens could use some expertise to get totally healthy. Still a challenging course on some holes and wide open on others. I had fun.
Esplanade at Azario Lakewood Ranch
Played On 05/16/2023Great developing course
I have been wanting to golf this course for a while. Finally I got a great deal so I jumped at the opportunity. The course is in wonderful shape even though it’s been very dry for a couple of months. It has good practice facilities, including free balls. The carts have very good GPS. The fairways and rough and traps and T boxes were all great. The greens were tricky because of a lot of undulation. It has a scenic design that would be even better if it wasn’t for all the construction. Glad I went there.
Paradise Golf Course
Played On 03/06/2023Quiet country course
Peaceful surroundings. Course in good condition. Good practice areas. Don’t know why they reduced the number of holes from 18 to twelve (no new development around course). The deal was great so I didn’t mind the short day.
IMG Academy Golf Club
Played On 12/30/2022Usually better
I expect IMG to be in top notch condition because it usually is. Today I was a little disappointed. There were some bad spots on some fairways and some thin areas in the rough. The worst part was that the greens were all brown colored. Yes, they were receptive and rolled true. But the brown color made them even more difficult to read. Hopefully it is just temporary and I caught it on a treatment cycle or something. Next time….
On a positive note, I love the extensive practice areas. Also, the cart GPS displays have been upgraded so you can touch to get distances AND they have a nice green slope map - that I had never seen before.
Don’t know why conditions were inferior since we are coming into peak season. The weather has been fine. I will go back in a while and expect to see things great as per usual.
Clearwater Country Club
Played On 11/30/2022Nice old course
This 100 year old course is still fun to play. I don;t know when it lost it;s "country club" status , but it is now a municipal golf course. I can tell from the layout that it was not a typical flat piece of land that someone decided to develop, like so many Florida courses. Of course, it is not long by modern standards, nor are the greens big and undulating. However, it does have a certain old-style charm.
All that being said, the course was fun to play and in decent shape. The greens were healthy and receptive. The fairways, bunkers, and tees were good. And it had an average warm up area. The rough was so-so. The holes were fairly wide open and there was not much danger.
However, on the back nine someone got the bright idea to put long wide waste areas along the landing zones of several fairways. This must have been recent because they do not appear on Google Maps. This means that otherwise good drives can roll into a waste area and make a fun hole into a frustrating hole. I guess the obvious reason to mess with the golfers like this would be to save money frrom maintaining grass.??!
Wicker Hills Golf Course
Played On 06/30/2022Improving
I have played Wicker Hills a number of times over the years. I think the new owners are really trying to upgrade the condition of the course. The greens were all healthy and receptive. The fairways were healthy and thick. I didn’t see any problem areas anywhere. It’s very user friendly for an average golfer. I think it’s worth a try for a budget/country type course.
White/Blue at Myakka Pines Golf Club
Played On 05/02/2022Great place to play
This is the 36th public course that I have played in the area and I was very impressed. Conditions were great. Course was not overly hard to play. Very quiet location. Good pace. Great practice facilities. Receptive and relatively flat greens. Fair price. Good GPS. Can’t ask for much more!!
Tatum Ridge Golf Links
Played On 04/13/2022Much improved!!
This course has come a long way in the past couple of years. The fairways are now dark green and lush. The greens are healthy, smooth and receptive. Traps are good. Rough is ok in many places. Some tees still need work. No GPS on the carts but the greens do have double flags so you have some clue where to shoot.
I like this property (no houses). The course has little danger so it is a relaxing place to play. I booked online the day before we played and saved a lot of money.
10 & 19 at University Park Country Club
Played On 04/11/2022Great golf experience, as always.
I have golfed 35 different courses in the area and University park is my favorite. Immaculte conditions, fair layout, excellent practice areas, and beautiful views make this course about as good as it gets.
Sandpiper Golf Club - Lakes/Palms Course
Played On 12/12/2022Straight holes, small greens
Wanted to get out and try this course before a possible shutdown next spring. Worth a look.
The fairways, greens, tees and traps were in fairly good condition with a few weak spots here and there. Ok practice area. No GPS on carts. Almost all of the holes were straight in front of you. You can aim for the flag from the tees. Greens were quite small, like the size of a tee area. Once you got on them the putting was not hard. Senior tees were short.
A quiet and low danger experience. I had a good day.
The Club Renaissance
Played On 11/28/2022Golf community type course
Several ok courses in this community. This one had no driving range. No GPS on carts. Tees, fairways, and rough in good condition. Greens were healthy but so firm that my best iron shots would bounce and roll off the greens. Aiming short didn’t help because of traps, elevated greens, and soft approach areas.
Pretty straightforward course without a lot of danger. Fixing the greens would make it much more enjoyable.
Thanks for taking the time to review and visit us. We just finished a greens renovation project upon our re-opening last month.
When completing new greens, there are typically firmer to start but are very true and playable. The softness of the greens comes naturally through play. We look forward in hosting you again soon.
Buffalo Creek Golf Course
Played On 11/14/2022Much improved
Over the past couple of years the new management has really upgraded this course. The fairways, greens, and rough are in great condition with thick healthy grass. The tees are being grown in. You can choose to hit from grass or a mat in the practice area. And they have new carts!!
A few areas are wet (even though it hasn’t rained in four days) but that’s probably from all the extra watering to grow everything in. A very nice, quiet, affordable place to enjoy a round of golf.
Tatum Ridge Golf Links

Keeps getting better. Fairways and greens now in very good condition. Rough and traps are good. Tees still need to improve but some of them are being worked on.
A nice, quiet, low key place to play.
Misty Creek Country Club
Played On 05/13/2022Wonderful place to golf
Of the 36 different public golf courses that I have played in the area, Misty Creek is right up in the very top tier. It is definitely the most scenic, with beautiful views on many holes. The few times that you can even see houses they are not even close to play. Super quiet! Great condition. Very good practice areas. The only thing missing would be good on-cart GPS displays so a non-regular could tell where to shoot and how far to hit it. Definitely a thinking person’s golf course. My phone GPS app was a lifesaver. Enjoy!!
The Preserve Golf Club
Played On 12/09/2021Challenging but fair to play
The fairways, greens and traps were in good condition. Some tees and some rough areas were only in so-so condition. The greens were receptive even in the afternoon. They rolled true and only had a modest amount of slope. Lots of water and doglegs but ample room to avoid danger if you can keep it in control. Having my GPS app helped since there was none on the cart. Very few houses close to play. I like The Preserve.
