Hidden Falls Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2018Another fun round at Hidden Falls
Checkin was fast, although there was some confusion about which cart to take.
We really enjoyed the round. The front 9 is definitely a bit easier than the back 9, but the challenge is fun. On holes 12-17, especially, you have to place your shots. On 14 and 16, pay attention to the "xxx yards to ..." markers at the tips, they'll help you avoid the water.
The greens were wonderful and their slopes are another challenge.
I enjoy coming out there from Round Rock, particularly when the price (Golf Now Hot Deal) is in effect.
Legacy Hills Golf Club
Played On 08/19/2018Great fun, course in pretty good condition
I like the layout of this course. If you think your way around the course, and hit the shots you mean to ;), then it's great fun. The greens were in great shape, as were the tees. The fairways were very good, too.
Bluebonnet Hill Golf Club & Range
Played On 08/04/2018Course in good shape
Had a fun round. Course was in good shape. The tees were a tad rough, but the greens were smooth and pretty fast. The rough was not bad, and the fairways were generally in good shape. I really like the layout of the holes, they're reasonably challenging and reward good shots and smart play.
The Golf Club Star Ranch
Played On 07/29/2018Course looking, great Hot Deal value
I haven't played Star Ranch in a couple of years, generally because even though the price includes a meal, it's just a bit steep compared to other, admittedly rougher, public courses. The GN Hot Deal helped me get out there, and I had a wonderful time.
The course is looking pretty good. Some of the tee boxes could have been trimmed/weeded a bit, but the fairways were good (typical tight Texas summer lies) and good were roling pretty smooth and true.
Pace of play was wondeful, our Sunday afternoon foursome got around in under 4 hours.
The staff was good, although a little stern.
Practice facilities were nice, as usual.
Overall, a great bang for the buck and a fun hot Sunday afternoon.
Roy Kizer Golf Course
Played On 06/03/2018Fun round, course in nice shape
We had a very enjoyable round. Our green fee was great, being a GolfNow Hot Deal.
Interestingly enough, for 1 pm on a Sunday, there was no one ahead of us, so our pace of play was really good, until the last 2 holes.
The course was in very nice shape. The tees were good, the fairways and rough were very good, and the greens were generally very nice and smooth, with only an occasional bumpy surface.
I've always enjoyed the layout of KIzer (and it's neighbor, Jimmy Clay). It is not particularly hard, but is laid out nicely, in terms of presenting what appear to be daunting water carries. If you just hit a decent shot, however, all is well.
I definitely look forward to going back.
Lions Municipal Golf Course
Played On 04/15/2018Fun to think of the course history while playing
Lions is always a bit challenging for me. A few holes just psych me out, so it's good to come back and try to do well.
I like the course layout, with its angles and hazards. It's a nice blend of straightforward holes and slightly trickier ones. Some holes tempt you to "go for it" when a smarter lay-up strategy might actually work better.
The greens were in nice shape and could be quick with subtle slopes on some of the greens. The fairways were tight (typical Texas turf), but the rough is rocky or bare ground; as always, fairway accuracy is rewarded.
The clubhouse is nice, the staff helpful and friendly enough. The snack bar is good. The range is minimal.
There's a lot of history here. Check out http://www.savemuny.com/legends-of-lions.html
White Wing Golf Club
Played On 04/08/2018Love this course
Got a good deal on this course for a Sunday round.
I really like all three courses in Sun City Georgetown, but had not played this course for a while.
They have flipped the 9s since I last played in November 2015, which threw me a bit. So, at this time, the hole near the range is NOT #1, it's #10, and clearly marked by a sign in front of the range (that I completely missed, thinking I knew where #1 was).
The check-in guy didn't mention the flip of the 9s, but he had someone on hold, and was a bit flustered.
The course was wonderful. It was in very good shape, and the greens were smooth and fairly fast.
I found it fairly challenging, but not too long from the gold tees, for my playing ability.
If you're a single, you'll probably get paired up with a Sun City resident, who I've found to typically be a very friendly golf nut...!
I look forward to playing it again.
ShadowGlen Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2017Challenging layout in great condition.
Shadow Glen has always been one of my favorites since I started to play it a few years ago. It's always kept in good condition, but it's been especially good the last year or so.
The layout is challenging, to me, anyway. I tend to think the front nine is harder, but the back side also has its little testers.
The staff is very polite, the grill is fine, the course is wonderful. You really can't go wrong with Shadow Glen.
The only critique I would have is that in the past, I've seen fivesomes where members join up. This can slow the round down a bit.
Finally, a few tips, if I may be so bold (some cribbed from a many-time player of this course):
* Pay attention to the handicap vs. tee recommendations. The course is shorter and friendly enough from the white/6000 yds, but gets quite a bit more challenging from farther back.
* #4: there is plenty of room down the hill for a 3-wood shot, but if you stay on top, right-ish, the green is on the same level for a slightly longer approach shot.
* #s 5 and 6: you want to miss short or short right. Left is Very Bad
* #14: Nice risk/reward hole. I had great luck with a 3-wood from the white tees. If you can clear the center bunker on your tee shot, you're golden.
* #18: Green light for a go at eagle. Avoid the right :).
Legacy Hills Golf Club
Played On 05/10/2015Beautiful course
The three of us played early on a Sunday. The weather was threatening rain, which must have kept folks from coming out. For that reason, our pace of play was fantastic. We finished in 3-1/2 hours, which is pretty good for us, and that even included the typical ball searches due to errant shots.
The course was in wonderful shape. The driving range uses mats, but they are a type of mat that is pretty yielding, so there's not as much bounce as with mats I've hit in the past; very nice.
Checking in at the pro shop was effortless, the gentleman helping us was friendly and informative.
The course itself was beautiful, with gently rolling hills, and very well maintained tees, fairways, and greens. The bunkers had very nice, fine sand in them.
The rough was an interesting combination of long grass and wildflowers, making finding errant shots not SO impossible, but also contributing to a beautiful look.
This course is in Sun City, so of course there are many residents/regulars. We had no issues on course, but after the round, my brother-in-law just happened to be in the path of an oncoming cart, and the driver gave the impression that pedestrians should yield to him...! No matter, though; the course is a great place to visit. We've also played Cowan Creek, which is equally resort-quality; we're looking forward to trying nearby White Wing.
Short but plays long, beautiful course
This is a beautiful little course packed into a suburb of Atlanta. Although it's only 5800 yards or so, it seems to play longer, since there are some blind shots and significant doglegs.
I joined a twosome that had played the course before, but while they knew about a given hole, we were all confused by how the holes had been mixed up. If you have a golf GPS for your smartphone, you'd best not worry about what it's showing for par on the hole, at least for the front nine; the back nine seemed to track with the app was using.
It was kind of amusing to see golfers on different holes crisscrossing on cart paths to get to their next shot or next hole.
Aside from that, the course was in very nice shape. The greens were very good. Some of the bunkers were in OK to poor shape, so stay out of those ;).
The 18th hole is fun, if you can hit it straight: you fire your tee shot between a small opening at the top of a hill (after you wait for an all-clear from the employee at the bottom of the hill), and then go look to see where your tee shot wound up.
The holes definitely place a premium on accuracy.
