Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Played On 03/16/2021Crescent Pointe is a good test
This is my third time playing Crescent Pointe. It s Palmer design that is very challenging. Normally the course is wet but after heavy winds yesterday the course was dry and running fast.
I would recommend it to anyone visiting the Hilton Head/Bluffton area.
Wachusett Country Club
Played On 07/10/2016Excellent Donald Ross Layout
Wachusett Country Club is an exceptional golf club with a fantastic Donald Ross layout. The layout is challenging and diverse. Holes 8-13 are pound for pound some of the most demanding stretches of golf in the New England area.
Conditions are always excellent and the clubhouse offers a great atmosphere for a few cold ones after a very enjoyable round. Less than an hour from Boston this is a course you could play every day and never become tired of it.
#2 at Ponkapoag Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2016Abominable Conditions
This was my first time back at Ponky #1 after about 20 years. I played many times in the past as I grew up in the area. I had heard that the conditions had improved considerably after an extensive renovation after years of neglect. I can tell you that the conditions haven't improved much at all in 20 years. As long as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts owns Ponkapoag there is no hope that it will ever be an acceptable golf course(s). Ponky has been a patronage haven for politicians for years and it appears that this environment still exists. Investment must be made to cut down trees, clean up brush throughout the property and install cart paths. Only a private company can do all these things. The Commonwealth of Mass. will not. Contrast this course with the two owned by the City of Boston (George Wright and Franklin Park) and you will note that Boston gets it and Massachusetts doesn't .
Don't waste your money here. Until this becomes a real golf course. Go to the many other very good golf courses in Massachusetts.
George Wright Golf Course
Played On 8/4/2013George Wright Remains Hidden Gem
Hard to believe that a golf course in Boston is a hidden gem, but it is. This Donald Ross design is a fantastic layout with the classic Ross greens. You can't stray off the fairways or you pay a big price. The greens at George Wright are the best I have played all year without question and that includes the likes of the International-Oaks, Red Tail, Whitinsville, Peabody and Shaker Hills. Rounds can be a bit slow but not out of the ordinary for public courses. Course gets 5 stars for greens, layout, value and Donald Ross. You can't lose with a Donald Ross course. Just wish he was still around to design more of these gems.
Red Tail Golf Club
Played On 7/28/2013Course in Serious Decline
Red Tail has been considered one of the better upscale public golf course. The design is very good with great asthetics. Unfortunately the course has never been in such bad shape. The conditions are horrendous. Some of the greens are unplayable in spots. The signature bunkers on the hillside on No. 2 are being allowed to overgrow probably to save maintenance costs. The waste bunkers look like they haven't been maintained in a few years. The entire facility feels like one that is on the verge of bankruptcy and that would be a shame.
Management needs to reduce the price to $75 with cart during prime hours and $ 60 with cart during off hours. This is not a $100 golf course any more. Reduce the price and get more golfers out on the course. Then use the proceeds to maintain it to past levels. Otherwise, Red Tail is done until the next owner takes over.
