Good 9 hole option close to uptown

Good 9 hole option close to uptown, solid condition, greens are actually green, pace can get slow but it didn't this time, not real expensive, range to warm up at, practice greens to warm up or practice at. Probably would pass if the price was higher than it is, but for convenience, a quick round, taking out someone that's newer to golf -- just all around a solid option near the city.

Nice course, good value

Nice layout, elevation changes are cool given so many courses in the area have very little change throughout the course. Greens were green and rolled pretty true albeit a touch slow. Would have been nice if they were a little faster, but they were well maintained and it had rained a bit so maybe future rounds as we get into summer will be like that. It’s not an easy course particularly the first time playing with a bunch of hazards. But it was a lot of fun, and knowing the dog legs, where to miss, etc. next round will be even more fun. It’s a bit of a drive from uptown CLT area, but worth it for a good price here and there. Won’t be weekly but I’m sure I’ll be back plenty. A nice pavilion looking building is under construction now - fingers crossed it’ll be a nice place to chill after a round and enjoy a beer.

Good value muni course

Good value at this course. Condition is so much better than Harry Jones, which is managed by the same company... so I don't know why this course is really pretty solid, and that one sucks so much these days. The greens here at CTM were pretty solid - green...which is always a good start, and they were a nice speed for the average golfer I think. Not slow but not fast where they'll frustrate more novice players. Layout is pretty nice, several nice looking holes. Fair rate to ride 18 too. I'd say this is pretty similar quality and value to Sifford, but Sifford is a 9 hole course and this is 18, so depends what you're looking for, but these two (CTM and Sifford) blow the other muni courses out of the water.

Good value, fairly easy, pretty short course

The course is pretty short, so I'd play the blues - they're more like white tees at most courses, and even then a little short. There are a couple par 5s that are really just long par 4s that need a solid tee shot. Layout is so-so, some holes it's decent, some holes are pretty straight and not much going on. Greens are slow, but they are green, so for this price range I consider that a win. Course was pretty wet, and we've gotten rain here and there recently, but seems like it should have drained a little bit more. We did play the 18 of course, not the 9 hole learning course just to make sure there's no confusion. But overall good value with this course. A little short but at least it's green and for $32 and (for us) not a real long drive, it's a good course to go get some swings in a have some fun. Definitely not going to be my go-to every week, but here and there it's good and also good for playing with friends just getting into the game.

Never again

I've probably played this course more than any other in the CLT area. I'll echo what another reviewer said though saying the condition of the course has really gone downhill. It's always been a bumpy ride, fine, but that's gotten worse. Fairways vs. rough, can't really tell, but I can live with that to some degree at the price. The worst part are now the greens - and they used to be tolerable. But most of the greens are half dirt. The ones that have grass are pretty meh. This course is very conveniently located and not expensive, which is what had kept me coming back. The last 3 or so times I've gone I finished by saying it was the last time, but this time I really think that's for real. Because it's not so inexpensive to be worth it - I'd rather drive 45 minutes to a course as cheap or cheaper in twice as good of a condition. I've played here about once a year the last three years and I guess the long layoff between playing here makes me forget just enough how terrible it is to give it another shot. Not again. The greens and overall condition were definitely better back in 2013/2014 range when I played here for the first time. One of the other frustrations, but tolerable when the greens were passable and a round was cheap enough, is the fact that it takes real effort to find a truly flat area on tee boxes to set up. That's not supposed to be a challenge in golf -- side hill lies because you hit it somewhere that isn't ideal? Yeah. Finding a flat spot, ideally with grass, on a tee box? No. Charles Sifford course just up the road (but just 9 holes) is so much nicer - and both are county run courses, so I'm not sure why such a disparity -- HLJ is on a landfill and don't think Sifford is, or at least as far as I know, so maybe that's a factor -- but that doesn't explain the huge decline the last 5+ years. It's too bad because the layout and features would be solid if there was grass where there should be grass and a little maintenance done around some of the water and landscape in general. Do yourself a favor and spend an extra $15-20 bucks and plays some where much much nicer.
