Newbury & Crookham Golf Club
Played On 09/26/2017A little gem of a test for the average handicapper. Big hitters should murder this course so how come they don't!
A great set of Par 3's is the reason. 5 of them with memorable definition and high Stoke indexes. Not a long course but it has a few ups and downs and a couple of testing drives to the fairway off the white tees for average drivers of the ball.
The Par 3 9th and 17th are brilliant holes whilst the easy, driveable, par 4 12th (s.i. 17) is not easy at all!
Current free keeper has improved the greens no end and fairway definition is very good. Only drawback can be lack of sand in bunkers after periods of rain but this is irrelavent if you miss them altogether!
Good value golf, clubhouse and close to the M4 if travelling, this is a lovely parkland course to visit.
Barbaroux Golf Club
Played On 08/29/2017Much improved hotel course since Mercure took over
We have played here many times and, after our previous visit, said we would not return as the course was unkempt and hotel average BUT we saw a change of owner and tried it again this summer. Well, what a change.
The green keeper has either changed or been better directed as the course, greens etc were much much better. Rough had been reduced, was just playable (before you lost the ball......period) and the course had greater definition to it. Good run on fairways and a most enjoyable experience.
However the course, which is set amongst rocky outcrops and slopes, still has a couple of holes where players cannot determine a line or even see where their ball has landed and this is frankly holding back this course from being a really good one. A high handicapper might have problems here and buggies are a must due to the ups and downs.
We will return as good food etc. Is available and a stay at the hotel or lodges very handy for the course.
Esterel Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2017Overrated, over priced and need to attend to customer service
We are regulars in the South of France so know the routine of fleecing summer tourists but golf clubs are normally the ones to buck this trend. Not so L'Est!
Pretty bog standard welcome with a request that, in future, we book buggies led us to a tee where we were expected to play with a lone golfer even though we had already established with the club that our 3 ball would be very welcome to play together, alone. Obvious embarrassment all round and rude remarks from said lone golfer about Brits! We were playing a week's competitive golf hence our request in the first place.
Anyway this is the third visit to a course which is ok but has some ordinary holes and one distinct par 3 which is almost impossible to hit for handicap golfers. Some wet areas and slow play make this a course to miss really, particularly when St. Endreol and Barbaroux are available.
Ok if you want to play to their behest and not yours (who is paying?) and best mid-week, not Saturday's.
Domaines of Saint Endreol Golf & Spa Resort
Played On 08/25/2017Consistently excellent course and facilities
We play here once or twice a year and, with some wet areas reservations, this course is alway fun to play and had great views across the hills and river. This year has been very dry (never seen the river so low) but the course was lovely with some great holes and the singularly memorable par 3 from a great height off the white tees. Buggies are a must here really due to the ups and downs but you will enjoy a good walk if out of the summer heat.
Good teeing options, testing par 5's and a good set of 3's with plenty of water about.
Clubhouse is friendly, accommodating, good food from bar and restaurant. Nice for wives to join after the game if a male group is playing.
