Great design

This was my 1st time playing in the NC Sand Hills, and also my 1st time playing a Coore/Crenshaw "minimalistic" design. I was excited to get to play it after watching the US Open last year and knowing it was designed in somewhat the same fashion. The course was in great shape, greens were smooth and moderately quick considering the amount of moisture they were holding due to it being overcast, cool, and damp out. They would be really fun if it had been sunny and dried them out. Lots of undulation in them. Really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back. The fairways were perfect in the center and got thinner as you got to the edges of them due to the single row irrigation, of course that is the intent. The bunkers are all waste areas so you can ground your club in them and there are no rakes so you have to smooth it with your foot(they are intended to be hazards) and the "rough" of natural sandy areas/wire grass/and native vegetation was sometimes playable off of hardpan, and sometimes very penile as intended. If you are a architectural nut like me you will love this course. I would like to go back and walk the course with a caddy because I think I would appreciate it much more. The $70 winter rate is a steal and the course looks awesome with everything dormant but the greens. A must play if you are in the area.

Really fun greens

Day we played they had topdressed the greens but they were still really quick and smooth. Greens are the best part of the course, lots of undulation on them. Really enjoyed it and can't wait to play it again.

best in area i've played this year.

Tee'd off at 7:42 and was done by 11:20. Course was in fantastic shape, tees, fwys, and greens perfect. Greens were firm but held well struck shots, and rolled very well. If they had them too fast they would be unplayable because they have so much undulation. They have reworked the bunkers since I last played and they look really good, especially the wood planks on the bunker faces of 13. My only complaint would be the pins were set really hard. It is US Open weekend so I guess they wanted to give us a test. Just a great, course, if you are in the area it's a must play.

A Donald Ross gem!

Camden Country Club is a fantastic old southern golf club. It is a classic Donald Ross golf course with domed greens, run off chipping areas, deep bunkers, and natural waste areas with wire grass on several holes instead of rough. The course was in excellent condition even though we got an absolute downpour last night. They did not mow the greens the day I played but once the dew burned off they were plenty quick and very firm. There is a railroad that runs through the back nine and several trains passed by, pretty neat. It only plays 6,500 yards from the back tees, but at a par 70 it is all you want in a golf course, especially considering the difficulty of the green complexes. If you get the opportunity to play this classic Ross layout, jump at it, you won't be disappointed.

Consistently average.

Let me start by saying I love this golf course. I have played it for the better part of the past 15 years, I love the layout, I love the location, the people that work here are extremely nice and helpful. Now for the bad part. The course has consistently been a disappointment in the conditioning area. Today, they walk mowed the greens and they were good, nice speed, smooth for the most part(the front nine had several greens with large areas of plugs that are still growing in.) and were very receptive to shots. The rest of the turf on the course just doesn't look well. It looks like none of the mower blades are sharp so the turf is not cut tight and the turf is not very dense and not very strong. Many of the tee boxes have large bare spots and are uneven. The bunkers have sand that is very fine and there is too much of it in the bunkers. I understand that it is a hazard but I hit a 6 iron low into the wind that hit in the flat area of a bunker and it plugged deep, this shouldn't happen. Again, I love this course and will continue to play it and would recommend it to anyone given the price isn't to high. I just wish they could get the course into the condition that it deserves to be, it is too good of a course, with one of the best locations in Jacksonville. I will keep hoping for the best to come out in Queens Harbour.

Wow! You took the words right out of my mouth. I have always liked this course and know that it will likely improve significantly soon. My biggest concern was the root structure/turf of the fairways. It was not dense and certainly not like playing on "carpet." (Carpet = North Hampton's fairways...awesome). As far as the traps...very heavy and dense. They also had not been raked. I'm hoping they improve soon.

1st time playing, tough course, will be back for sure.

The course was in good shape, challenging layout. Greens looked like they were still recovering from edification but the rolled well, were just a tad inconsistent with speed. The course is great, my day was soured by one player I was paired with. He has only been playing a couple years and that is fine but he had terrible etiquette, played slow, and did just about everything wrong you could to bring a foursome down.

Woodlands CC

Overall a good course, good design, well maintained, pace of play was good even behind a tournament. After a lot of rain 2 days ago I expected it to be very soggy, but the course had drained very well. Greens were good speed and smooth. Very fun course with several challenging holes from back tees.

If you live in the Midlands go play this course!

My 1st time playing and it won't be the last. Fantastic design, challenging old style course. I kept thinking that the course was a Donald Ross design, then did some research and read that Elis Maple hadworked under him. Course was in good shape although you can tell that it has struggled in the past few years. The greensrolled very true and quick.

Played the course today(7 June) andthe course was in fantastic shape. The greens are the healthiest I have seen this year and rolled true and had good pace. They have already aerified the tees and fwys and are doing the greens this comming monday, I'm sure in a couple weeks they will be back in great shape. This is just a really, really good course and so much fun to play.
