Southern Oaks Golf Club
Played On 04/08/2021Great Layout
I didn't expect this course (or any for that matter) to be in excellent condition after the winter we just experienced. The course is in prime condition, the fairways are good, the greens are manicured and speed is good. This course is the BESY for practice - and for warming up. The range balls are included in the price - as many as you want to hit. The chipping green is surrounded by large bunkers and again, there are ample balls to practice chipping and bunker shots. There is a large practice putting green and even with 10 or so there, plenty of room to practice putting. The course layout is challenging even though the fairways are wide in most instances. There are multiple fairway bunkers. Water doesn't come into play really unless you hit a very errant slice. Tees are level and in good shape. The beverage cart came around 3 times during the round. There was a large cooler loaded with ice on the way to the 1st tee - and towels in each cart. I believe this is one of the best deals in the area.

The practice areas and driving range are top notch. There is a huge undulating putting green - and it is same condition as the greens. There are level putting lies, downhill, uphill and in between. Easy for 10-15 putters on the practice green at one time. There is a pitching practice area (balls supplied as part of round fee). There are a couple bunkers to practice sand shots. And, you can pitch uphill, downhill, etc. Again, balls supplied - no extra cost. Now, the driving range - it is best of the best. Balls supplied - no extra cost. The range is lighted (well lighted) for evening practice. You won't find a better driving range. mats when ground is really wet. The course is a really good layout - designed by Mark Brooks and the setting is beautiful forest. 4 tee boxes, all LEVEL and good grass. Fairways always lush and well mowed. Greens have NO brown spots - Uniform grass and decently fast greens. Bunkers are plentiful - guarding greens and along fairways on par 4 and 5's. Pace of play is generally good although they do allow 5 somes weekdays and it can be a trial sometimes. They should have a marshal on course but, I have never seen one. The value is I would say BEST VALUE in DFW metroplex. his could be a private club easily - and there is no private club that offers this value. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Only negative - I wish it were not so far to return carts to return area from the parking lot - Yeah, i am tired after a round - 76 and could be in better shape. just have to gripe about something. Right?

From me, it is 45 minute drive. However, th course is always in excellent condition. The greens are relatively fast but, roll well. The elevation changes are great - you can see forever from a lot of the tee boxes - BTW, the tee boxes are flat, and well maintained. There are some blind T shots so the first time, it pays to drive up and see where you should aim. Staff are pleasant and helpful. The carts have GPS on board and it is a sophisticated GPS with hazards, etc. - FREE. You will enjoy the scenery and the open air and the golf. Challenging layout - but, the fairways are very generous. Greens are pretty sizable and well bunkered. There are fairway bunkers as well - but, again, the fairways are wide. No negatives to my mind. A great way to get out of the city and enjoy a day on the links.
Tangle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 12/03/2019Solid layout, course condition was excellent
This course offers an excellent layout; conditions are always top notch. The staff are helpful and the concession is well managed. The GPS on the cart was no extra charge and it was excellent. I believe this is one of the best golf values in DFW. Easy to get to off of I-20 is a good thing. We like to play different courses but, if I played one course only - in this area - it would be Tangle Ridge.
Cleburne Golf Links
Played On 02/29/2016Best value and great burgers - Super course!
This course was transformed when it was re-constructed. It sits on Lake Cleburne and the views are stunning. They are now adding sand bunkers - which will add difficulty - and they are well done. The grill is really good - flame broiled burgers - best I have had at any golf course. Not a long course but with water in play (ponds and Lake Cleburne) on a number of holes, it's a good course with plenty of challenge. Try to avoid really windy days as there is nothing to stop the wind - the course sitting along the lake. The staff have always been super helpful and friendly. The pro shop has a good offering and prices are fair. There a number of elevated T's (#3&4 come to mind) which are fun to hit from. Yeah, it is a drive - but, well worth it - this course is a hidden gem, a real sleeper.

Played On 06/01/2015Who is maintaining T time schedule?
We were booked for 1253 t time. We arrived early and we asked the employee (only employee at the time) in the pro shop if we would be called to the T. He said "yes". After awhile, we went back in after having seen 2 groups T off. and asked when we were up because we heard NO calls to the T. The employee said we would be up after the 2 groups waiting on the T at the time. We said are you running late because you didn't say anything to us earlier. He walked out the door ,looked out at the #1 T and said "Oh, the group on the T now were supposed to go off at 1222 and they were missing on of their players and the other group has a 1245 T time. It was 1245 which meant we would be 1Pm before we were up. I told the employee that I was not happy - he should have managed the T better and he just turned and walked back inside the pro shop.

The greens on the front nine were unplayable. I heard the greens would be "replaced" next week. I should have known in advance that the greens on the front 9 were so bad.

Played On 12/16/2013Major Upgrades and improvements
Has a new owner and many improvements are evident - from the clubhouse (really good food now) to a retainer wall at #17 which will save two humongous trees which would have been left to die and fall if the new owner hadn't got this done pdq. I suspect there will be ongoing improvements - to make this one of the premier courses in DFW. It already boasted a great layout and the area is very nice - high tier homes and forest all around. The improvements to the driving range/practice areas are significant. I look forward to playing this course regularly and will recommend it to all my golf buddies.

This course is always in super condition. Practice facility is top notch. While not the longest, there are plenty of challenges - if you score well here, chances are you score well anywhere.
